New car & LOUD 4K RPM??

So I just got my Evo X delivered from FL to AZ but I had to pick it up at the transport company which is just about 2 miles from home. It went on the auto carrier with just 5 miles on the odometer and arrived the same. Brand new not even broken in yet.

As I was driving it on my way home, I would get this loud drone noise. First I thought it was the exhaust. Did not pay too much attention. I was just happy this car finally arrived in one piece. Although dirty.

Tonight, had to drop off a movie at the local rental and decided to take the new car for a spin. Why not? I need to rack up miles for break in anyway

This short trip was about 10 miles. I noticed every time I approach close to 4K at the tachometer, from either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear, a drone noise would get louder and louder and becomes almost deafening. I am sure its right in front of me coming from the engine bay. Sound more like exhaust than mechanical. Did a search but none related to my issue.

Could it be an exhaust leak in the engine bay area closer to the firewall?
Or the car is so new that it just needs to be broken in.
Seems quite odd to get so loud as I'm approaching 4k RPMs.

Is this common for EvoX's?
Thanks

Its probably an exhaust leak.
Ive driven my friends Lancer Evolution X GSR when he got it and it was no where near deafening at around 4k RPM.
Car was completely bone stock at the time.
Try check the exhaust out for cracks and stuff.

I wouldnt look at anything at all on that car. It's well under warranty, bring it to a dealer and let them worry about it.

the newer ones (2011 and up) have a flapper in the muffler that opens at around 4k and is whats causing the drone.

This good to know However, the noise is coming from the front area and its louder than the exhaust.

I hate to take it to the dealer but I need to get it checked out. I don't trust dealers especially when volume of service > quality of service

maybe the dealer will let you hop into one of the test driver evos and let you listen for a difference.

My X, I felt, was rather quiet with stock exhaust, and it's still not as loud as my STi was with a TP and CBE.

You mentioned living in AZ. If you want to take it to a dealer take it to BigTwo off Superstition/60fwy. Their Evo tech Kyle is amazing, and the service department isn't bad at all.

Or if you're not a fan of dealers PM me I can suggest a few local tuners that can diagnose stuff incredibly quickly.

ALL YEARS have a "flapper in the exhaust", but that is behind the driver not in the engine bay.
The O2 housing has springs, perhaps one is not torqued down all the way (who knows) but that does sound like an exhaust leak (stock exhaust is very quiet).

MINE does the same thing gets really loud drone at around 4,000rms. Sounds really bad when going slow and reving it out, makes you want to shift to make it go away. Mine sounds like it comes from the front to. Had mine 2 monthes and has always done it and mine is 2013 EVO with 700 miles on it now. This is why i am looking at a new exhaust

ohhhhh, you are slowly accelerating to 4k? Yeah, that's no bueno as you are aren't spooling the turbo. I'd say either short shift at 3k (which is normal DD/I want my gas mode) or give it atleast 40% tps to get the turbo spinning.
Is this your first turbo car? You can't quite drive them like a big V8.
