Just got pulled over by chp for modified exhaust. I have a tomei expreme ti catback and a k&n filter with a perrin turbo inlet... does anyone know the decibel reading for that exhaust? it is pretty loud regardless. this is my first time so I want to know what process I have to take. All he said is report to the state reff the info is in the back of the ticket... I do have all the stock parts but I want to know what exactly will they check at the state reff before i put it back to stock.... pretty much want to keep from going back to stock. I know they will make sure everything is carb legal and all hoses connected right?... would I be able to pass with that exhaust and intake setup? And to top it off I recently got tuned at rre... will they be checking the ecu for a tune? 27156(b) and verbal 27150 vc or something like that is what he put on the ticket

Yeah I think I'm going to do that but I want to keep my exhaust... I don't know if this works but a friend told me his cousin has the same exhaust and got pulled over for a modified exhaust so he had to do the decibel test and all he did was stuff some insulation prior to going to the reff appointment and passed.... I dknt know how he did that but supposedly it worked for him and he got some sticker under his hood stating that exhaust was ok and took off the insulation after he passed.Originally Posted by stageup
put on stock intake + exhaust to pass the ref, no way to pass w/o doing that

I've never heard of that. I know that it is pretty much illegal to have any modification on your car. Especially in CAOriginally Posted by diego88

You're not reading what other people are saying - with refs, stock is king. Pulling stunts with refs will only make your situation worse - much, much worse. If your friend's cousin's daughter's baby's brother got away with it, then good for him. Chances are, you won't.Originally Posted by diego88

The above suggests that it is also illegal to modify a car that is not registered in CA, which is not true.Originally Posted by LatinImagexx

I have a 2013 with a Cobb CBE. Would that pass a smog check? I don't have to worry about it for a while but wanted to check.
Whats up with cops giving you a ticket for your exhaust to loud? There are a few Porsche GT3's running around here and they don't get tickets. Those are the loudest cars I have ever heard from the factory.

Answered your own question and well a porsche is a porsche.
you can modify the exhaust beyond the cat. It just has to be within a certain decibel rating.
If your exhaust is below the decibel limit, then the ref can issue a certificate that it is ok and you can show that during your inevitable future CHP encounters (California! yay!).
Personally, I would just throw on the stock exhaust.

Section 44036 of the Health and Safety Code shall provide for the
testing of vehicular exhaust systems and the issuance of certificates
of compliance only for those vehicles that have received a citation
for a violation of Section 27150 or 27151.
(b) A certificate of compliance for a vehicular exhaust system
shall be issued pursuant to subdivision (a) if the vehicle complies
with Sections 27150 and 27151. Exhaust systems installed on motor
vehicles, other than motorcycles, with a manufacturer's gross vehicle
weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds comply with Sections 27150
and 27151 if they emit no more than 95 dbA when tested in accordance
with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998.
Now, keep in mind the fact that very few aftermarket exhausts meet this and when they do, its because they came with a silencer that nobody ever uses. Personally, my silencer holds pens and paperclips on my desk at work, haha.27150.2. (a) Stations providing referee functions pursuant to

I'll go ahead and say I don't have any helpful advice, but is Califailia that bad about cars? I had no idea they were so strict that you can't even modify it, are there any people running heavily modified cars out there? Bigger turbo's, exhaust, fully built?

Florida is no inspection, you could strap a blower to a diesel truck & polute more than 100 cars would.
It's a anything goes state, heck you can have tint & don't need a front plate.
Who knows how many of us in other states get tickets for things that are 100% not enforced.
Speeding tickets & DUI is another story.

Yeah, California is strict when it comes to mods. It really depends on the city you live in though. I live in a somewhat small city and most of the cops are all familiar faces. My brother got pulled over for just an axel back on his Subie and for being an axel back it's pretty damn loud. State ref'd instantly.

im in hesperia and thats where i got pulled over for modified emissions 27156(b) marked as non correctable. i have already installed all the stock parts and will be calling tomorrow for an app with the state reff but i keep getting all this info... once i pass the reff and show the court the certificate do i still have to pay the full amount? some people tell me only like $10-25 for some court processing fees and some people say the full amount.... i guess each case is different? does any one from california have any info regarding this? that is my main concern if i still have to pay the full amount after going back to stock since the chp did put non correctableOriginally Posted by Sev
