First oil change at dealership = conventional oil
It's difficult when every guy who works there is a dick and thinks because they work on eclipses, lancers, and outlanders most of the time they know how to properly handle and maintain my 400whp evo. then there's the guys that are sketchy as all hell. Luckily I have a few good buddies who own a garage and build and tune evo's, sti's, gtr's, etc. all day long and they're who I go to if I can't manage to fix a issue myself.

My book says... use SYN

Synthetic all the way for any performance oriented car...simply better protection. Crazy not to spend the extra few bucks to invest in your $35-40K car.
It is odd though, I checked my manual (2012 GSR) and it just states to use 5W-30 and only seems to "recommend" synthetic for best performance and protection. There is no question in what one should put in any Evo but I wonder if the 2012+ models no longer require synthetic oil to retain your Powertrain warranty.

New conventional oil ratings and quality
This released by the American Petroleum Institute
SN CURRENT Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high temperature
deposit protection for pistons, more stringent sludge control, and seal compatibility. API SN with Resource
Conserving matches ILSAC GF-5 by combining API SN performance with improved fuel economy, turbocharger
protection, emission control system compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing
fuels up to E85.
I just got my 2014 3k free oil change and they put in conventional oil which I was extremely pissed about. I will be changing my oil at 5k with mobil1 for sure. Also want to say that oil before 2011 with lower than SN rating was not required to have protection for turbocharges or the engines they are in. I think it would be fine to use conventional for up to the first few oil changes without any damage. Pay in mind that you would want to take into consideration for extreme temps in your area.

Yeah I don't know if that's why, especially since Subaru never required synthetic for the STI since it went on sale here in 2003. So I doubt that Mitsubishi was worried about that maintenance cost that literally might be another $50 annually.
When my I bought my evo fe at Tony Mangino Mitsubishi my salesperson brought me to the service manager to go over maintenance and he said "Don't listen to anyone that tells you to use conventional, only use synthetic and change it every 3k miles. The x deteriorates oil very quickly." He also said he saw a lot of people start to have issues around the 2500 mile mark. They sell a lot of evos up there so I assume they know what they're doing.
Seems to me the reason very simple, some people are incredible cheap.
Why are you compering STI engines to an Evo one ? As soon as you build your own Evo engine you might need a different engine oil ... Just food for thought.
I wasn't comparing them, but my post ended up in this thread in error (and not in the intended one), since the mobile version of the site is stupid. So that might be why it's an odd comparison (and bumping a thread from 2015). My bad.
