Don't Wreck Your EVO!

My son wrecked my '08 MR that had 22K miles on it with zero modifications (other than debadge). He was making a left hand turn and didn't see a car coming. The car hit the passanger side and damaged the 2 doors back to the rear tire area. It looks like $5000 of damage. However, the body shop/dealership estimated it at $20,000! Therefore, the insurance company is considering it a total loss and has offered me a settlement. If I knew how to upload pics I would. The front, back, and drivers side are undamaged. There is not mechanical damage, or frame damage according to the dealership. The door glass didn't even break. The problem is that the oem parts are too expensive. For example, because the side airbag deployed (out of the passanger seat) they have to replace the whole seat - $2600. A minorly scratched rim - $1150, etc. The seat just needs a new airbag and then stitched back up, but they say you can't do that by law.

My son had 3 of his friends in the car and nobody was hurt. The curtain airbags also went off on the passanger side. The car definately is built for safety in a collision.

Anyway, I asked the insurance company if I could buy back the car and they said I could for about $3350 plus tax. I wish I had time and facility to mess with it, but I just don't.

Damn, that totally sucks especially since it had such low miles.......... However, good thing no one was hurt. Do you have any idea of what the dollar amount the insurance is going to give you?

Could part it out! I'm sure most of your drivetrain (if not all) is still functional. The SST is pricey as is the long block. I'll buy your gauge cluster if you decide to part out

There is a guy in Florida who bought my totaled evo and shipped it from Oregon and I made a cozy little profit on the deal without even touching it. It's what he does for a living. I still have his number, PM me if you want it. If you do it, maybe you could throw me a little finders fee. Let me know if your interested. The deal was well worth the 4 phone calls I made to get it done.

Glade to hear your son and his friends are okay. They Evo X's are a pretty great car when it comes to safety.

I as well have to agree with everyone else and say that you should buy it back to resell. There will be people out there that would love to rebuild it and could do the work them self. You can definitely make some money back if you don't want to rebuild it.

Best of luck tho with what ever you do

I wouldn't buy it back personally. It's done and chances are that if the rear tire was hit there is frame damage and would have required to be repaired. Everyone here always says to buy it back and sell the parts. Next thing you know your stuck with a car and getting low balled on the parts you are selling. Barely making back that 3350 plus tax. Just not worth the hassle in my opinion. For what an extra grand. As for turning it into a track car? Right! Brother had a 91 5.0 LX with a 347 stroker, spent over 40k on it, dragged it maybe a dozen times, then sat for 8 years and sold it for 10k. I'm sure you wife will love that!
