New to Evos...about to buy MR
New to Evos...about to buy MR
Hey All, I’m about to pull a trigger on an Evo MR, looking at 2010+.
Been searching the net and threads but didn’t help. Just curious before I pull the trigger.
I’m noticing several SE’s or MR’s sitting in dealer lots or being transfer from dealer to dealer, source CarFax.
These are 1 or 2 owner cars, and note I’m just generalizing here.
Is SST just not popular b/c of power limitations?
Is it a reliability issue?
I had a WRX before and a GR8 STi, test drove an 11 MR, with intake and exhaust.
Love the car!
Been test driving an 14 IS350 F Sport, 05 C2S --- just couldn’t pull the trigger. Thinking MR is it!
Why didn’t I test this car out sooner, dang, the 11 and 13 I was looking at, interior isn’t that bad and the ride is pretty good IMO.
Thanks for you feedback!

the going rate for these cars used is pretty high. and with all special interest cars there is a select market. unless the buyer has a sizable down payment are probably extremely picky as far as the loan goes. I hear alot of good things about the mr and the sst. as for me it just came down to personal preference. sporty car, manual tranny all the way.

I've been wondering the same. The dealer where I bought my car by far sells the most Evo's in my state. They currently have 25 Evo's and only 8 of them are GSR's. The Gsr's are flying off their lot and the MR's are just sitting around.
I'm not sure why that is. Maybe it's cause of the price of the MR? Not sure why the MR's arent really selling.

If I were to guess why tier not selling, would be because the mrs don't have a true manual transmission. And that's kind of a turn down when you purchase a sports car. So for the op that may be something you may want to consider as it may be harder to sell then a gsr in the long run. I personally wouldn't buy the new mr
My only guess is the cost. The MR is just as reliable and can handle just as much power as a GSR, of course you'll have to upgrade the SST a bit to handle more power, but you'd have to upgrade a clutch on a manual too.
Some people enjoy working the clutch, so they still prefer the GSR, something about feeling more sporty or what not (even though it's actually slower).

Wish the manual is 6 sp! But SE or MR is mainly for wife to use in those in case moments. Trying to keep it down to 2 cars, and its easier to justify to her when we're about to have a baby.
Been following the thread about the ACD issues and master cylinder...interesting.
Kendogg, yeah, dealer is telling me they're competitive in pricing and won't budge and its a "hot selling car" but again, I see the same cars in the ad and lot, and here in San Antonio, its been moving from dealer to dealer - just waiting to for the right deal

You're in San Antonio? If so, what dealer is it at?

Just bought my new 13 WW fully loaded MR. I love it! I mainly bought it because I wanted a fun, AWD, 4 door, car that my wife could also drive.
I had three manual cars in a row; a 2011 STI sedan, then a 2012 WRX hatch, and my last car was a 6 speed 2010 n54 135I M sport that was FBO+E85 pushing 404/453
I think it's funny when some guys think they are "manlier" than you because they have a manual transmission car
I am over having a manual for a daily.
If your looking to build the Evo X over 330-350 WTQ then get the GSR hands down.
If your like me, and looking for a fun, awesome handling, bolt on/conservatively tuned on pump, reliable daily driver. Than the MR is your choice!

I assume the two big reasons why the MR will tend to sit longer on a dealer lot is the MR's higher price tag and the GSR is easier/cheaper to mod. That said, the dealers around me seem to have a fairly equal supply of both (GSR & MR) last time I looked.
I got an MR because I love the double clutch transmission. It also allowed me to get all the fancy stuff (touring, premium, etc.), which made the little old Evo competitive against the German rivals. I actually was going to buy a new Audi S4 and got an Evo MR instead as it was just more fun. The doors may not close with a solid "thunk", but I still look forward to driving the Evo everyday even after 2 years of ownership.
Ignore anyone saying a true sports car has to have a manual. Simply look at what pretty much all (with some notable exceptions) current exotic and supercars use and that will tell you what a sports car comes with these days. The times they are a changing.
P.S. Not knocking a manual at all as I have owned/driven many over the years. It all comes down to personal preference.

It will be a long time before I sell my car but when I do, I think having a high mile MR might be a tougher sell than the GSR
There are lots of crazy factors to take into account. When i was searching for an Evo, here were a few things i can easily state. ( not all are true but this is what i felt was going on with evo trends)
1. A lot of leases / Military Purchases
- A lot of military people need to travel and relocate and they take their love ones with them ( hence the odd locations for a lot of Evo's on carfaxs)
- Lease returns will get flip flopped through dealer to dealer until someone can pull the trigger to buy one.
- anyone who actually buys to own are keeping there cars and will generally never have to let it go if they don't need too.
2. These cars are expensive
- Let be honest, a brand new one can range from $32K - $42K Easily!
- dealers know this and will hike the price to match the market and the hype of the car.
3. The not so flooded market.
- As WRX's and STI's are extremely similar in style and almost power, so many will tend to the WRX as a piggy back for not getting an STI cause of the price.
- The Evo has the Raliart, but there are soooo many differences that people tend to always try to grab a Evo if they can.
4. Specific market.
- This is not your average Honda civic. Your mom, aunt, or grandma won't be coming into a dealership looking for one of these everyday. Lots of dealerships that are out there reside in Suburban area's with dad's driving trucks or luxury cars, mom's driving vans / small luxury cars, and teens getting Scion or Civic's.
5. Timing!!!
- i was looking for an evo for easily a year if not longer until i found one i got a crazy good deal on that wasn't beaten up or over driven.
- Lots of dealerships will try to keep the car on there lot as long as they can, until they find it a lost profit ( lot insurance for the car to stay, maintenance like car washes and gas, Ect fee.)
- once its way too long they will try a Discount deal like internet pricing or what not, to get some traffic. If no one buys the car, then off to another dealership or auction.
There are wayyyyy more things but, this is the key things i kept in mind while searching and negotiating pricing with dealerships.
Best of luck on your findings!
