Question Considering Getting An Evo 9 MR

So I've found a passion in motorsports. I've taken both my Xs on hot laps.
I really enjoy the car and the way it handles. With stock suspension it feels quite stable and predicatble. Rotates evenly with good throttle control. The stock power is more than enough for my skills. All in all the X is an amazing machine built for the road.

I have a few extra bucks so there's a nice IX MR for sale and I'm thinking of scooping up. Someone I know knew the owner and said he took care of it. The car is stock. I intend to keep the car stock for mostly running laps.

I want input from people who have ran both these cars that can compare the differences in handling between both. At most I'd drop on swifts and roll bars with RCK for both. Stock otherwise.

Thanks.

I had an IX MR on Robispec Springs and a Whiteline BSK. It handled exceptionally well. Can I ask why you want an MR? Everyone I know who had an MR blew the trans and had to get it swapped with a 5 speed or they rebuilt the 6.

i thought you hated 9s jk

without at least some kind of rear diff mod on the evo 9, it won't handle as well as the X, period - so if you're just planning swings, roll bars, and rck, it's probably not worth it - better to just invest in your X.

ditto on above ab the trans - the 6spd doesn't tolerate heat well, which results in 3rd/4th gear usually going. you'll either want it built + trans cooler, or just get a 5spd gsr/se. really though, if you're not gonna modify the rear diff (see my sig), it won't rotate without doing wild things that will hurt the net performance of the car

+1 on what kyoo said. if you want the 9 to handle as good as the X, you'll definitely need to upgrade the rear diff as they come neutered for the USDM market.

I've tracked my 9 and a few friend's X extensively and I've found the X to be more neutral stock for stock, and the difference can be split in 2 stages - mid corner and exit. luckily, there are a couple of cheap mods that can level the playing field. ACD-tuning reflash ($300) fixes the turn-in and mid corner maintenance throttle push. the second must have mod would be an upgraded rear diff - it could be done for as cheap as $210+sh and a few hours of your time. I did the Weir 12 plate in my buddy's garage and I'm very satisfied with the new found power oversteer on a very tight track.

the 2 mods mentioned aboved combined with a set of Swift Spec R/Bilstein HDs and some decent tires should net you an exceptionally neutral and fast Evo to get started

upgraded rear diffs can run from $200-$1500. since you're just getting into it, I'd recommend Weir as it makes the biggest difference for the least amount of cash outlay http://www.weirperformance.com/maxgriplsdkits.html.

TRE is another good option as he offers other upgrades but he is a little hard to get a hold of http://www.teamrip.com/EVOLUTION%20R...20SERVICE.html

There are a few ways to tune your ACD, but I've read that ACD Tuning gives the best service and support along with fast turn around http://www.acd-tuning.com/evo-7-9.html

Excellent answers bros. Evo8/9 owners are definitely less cocky and more helpful then the group I belong to.
Lol @ Kyoo. Yeah we've had our differences but I always said I loved the 9. And I cant take away you the fact that you do know your way around the car and its valve cover lol/jk.

And the reason I want the MR is because I want the sixth gear. Im not a big fan of the modding till it pops avenue so since it'll be kept stock I figure the tranny should hold up just fine. But what do I know?
Upgrading the diff sounds like fun and I'd probably go that route.

You see comments such as that are what derails these kinds of threads and turns them into fanboy wars.
