EVOlutionary/Bruzewski One Lap of America Update
EVOlutionary/Bruzewski One Lap of America Update
From my original One Lap announcement:
My buddy David Bruzewski and I have teamed up to compete in the 2011 One Lap of America race (aka Cannonball One Lap). This thread will chronicle the build-up to the race, and will be where we post our adventures/trials/tribulations during the sleepless week of the race. Subscribe to follow along!
Our adventure starts with some key help from our partners/sponsors. Without them the car would not even make it to Indy for the first event! My threads throughout the years have pretty much detailed my Street Mod autocross build and all the different parts that I've chosen to make the car what it is today. Or WAS yesterday. We have a lot of changes coming for 2011 thanks to the help of our sponsors. Here are some of the highlights:
- all new livery. Even I don't know what this will be come race time. All the graphics will be stripped and hopefully we can come up with something sweet.
- new turbo. I have been running the same type of turbo for years, but now it's time to step it up a notch. Thanks to the help of CBRD we will be sporting a new ported BBK Full. This should yield better response, quicker spool, more bottom end, as well as more top end compared to my old setup (old setup was the ONLY original FP Green on the "fastest stock appearing turbo" list for 2010 with multiple 10.9 passes)
- fresh Girodisc brakes. I have been running the same set of Girodisc 2-piece rotors for FIVE years now. That is approximately 20,000 street miles, 600 AX runs, 75 drag runs, and 13 NASA HPDE track days. . . I'd say it's about time for some fresh rotors, don't ya think?!
Because of the frantic pace of this event and not knowing if we will have time to swap from street pads to race pads at each event we will try competing the entire event on ONE set of Hawk HP+ pads. (we'll take some extras just in case this idea does not work out)
- DHP downforce, baby! I have been with DHP since they made their first prototype wing and splitter for the EVO platform. We have gone through several updates and versions of each over the past few years as I have provided feedback and advice to DHP. For the 2011 One Lap of America we will be debuting a new custom DHP Rear Diffuser for the EVO. DHP built the diffuser for CBRD's awesome Time Attack Evo. This new version should be even more amazing. Later in the 2011 season we will have a full flat undertray developed for the EVO.
- Pure Tuning, of course! The company that provided our 2008 multiple National Solo2 Championship winning power deliver will be working their magic once again for 2011. Keith and Aaron at Pure Tuning come from autocross and road racing backgrounds, so they know how to make useable power at all throttle positions. They will be handling all the tuning (multiple fuel maps for pump gas, E70, E85), as well as some install and fabrication work for the car.
- fresh Exedy Clutch. You can't get the power to the ground if your clutch is slipping or disintegrated. And you can't slam an 8000rpm upshift if your clutch has locked you out! That's why David and I have been running Exedy and ONLY Exedy clutches since our stockers gave it up. My stock clutch started slipping on my stockish 2004 Evo with only 12K miles on the odometer. Been with Exedy ever since. We will be running the Exedy Hyper Compe-R twin disc. It is lighter than the regular Exedy twin disc as it has unsprung clutch discs and a lightened flywheel. I imported my first one of these from Japan four year ago, but now I believe Exedy USA stocks all the parts necessary for this unit even though it may not be in their catalog.
- work from Showcase Mitsubishi in Bay City, MI. They have some of the most highly trained and certified Mitsu mechanics in the country. Andy, the owner and my autocross racing partner, has been racing EVOs since they first arrived in the US in 2003. Past and present Showcase EVOs have won FOUR Solo2 National Championships, and somewhere around 15 Championships counting the new owners of his past cars.
Right now the car is up on jack stands and I am tearing it all down, cleaning and lubing and re-torquing everything, then reassembling it with the goods that will hopefully net us a class win at this year's One Lap of America. I know that is a HUGE goal for our first time ever running One Lap - based on how tough this race is maybe our goal should be to just finish the race!

Jarrod has racked up a respectable resume in the SCCA Solo2 world including 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th place trophies in his 5 years attending the Solo2 National Championship race. In the past couple years he has branched out into the NASA HPDE/TT realm of road racing and plans to compete for the NASA TTU crown in the Midwest and Great Lakes Divisions in 2011. So far Jarrod has been on-track multiple times at Mid-Ohio, Blackhawk Farms, Grattan, and Gingerman Raceway. Jarrod's EVOs have been featured in advertisements for The Tire Rack and also Hoosier Tires in both Grassroots Motorsports Magazine and Sports Car Magazine.
David Bruzewski (known as Bruzewski on EvolutionM.net web forums) has been racing Mitsubishis since 2002. He started his passion with a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T, but later fell in love with the EVO platform and has been in search of the ultimate EVO since 2005. His daily-driver EVO is currently the fastest EVO in Michigan, recording multiple 9.9 second quarter mile passes at the drag strip. David and his 750 horsepower street beast also hold the distinction of appearing in 5-straight issues of DSport Magazine, including one full feature article and a DVD feature. I have a handheld CB with a remote roof mount antenna. Hopefully that will be good enough. That's what I use on my trip to AX Nationals each year. And yes, it should be an adventure. . .
I will have the first batch of build pics and write up posted this weekend. . .
I think the hardest part is going to be deciding how to build a custom trailer hitch to tow a small trailer . . .

You can buy a hitch like mine from Slo boy racing. Fairly easy to remove, cheap, strong. no mods required. They prob have a couple left.

Rick, is it a stocked item? Couldn't find it on their website?
David and I are competing as a team in my Showcase Mitsubishi/Pure Tuning EVO. It WAS solely an autocross car, but it is slowly becoming a dedicated track car.

awesome stuff,
and we are glad to be apart of it!
I would recommend triangulating the splitter mounts (run some bracing backwards on an angle up into the fender well or under the frame rails) to give it support,
you could actually stand on our splitter when it was mounted

Thanks! Got it
What lower rear control arms are on the car? Looking forward to results with the BBK Full! My car ran pretty well with that turbo on 93 oct. and full weight, can't imagine how yours will do!!

I need some help picking tires. Has to be 140 treadwear or above, maximum grip on the track, and decent performance on a wet skidpad. So far my choices are:
Advan Neova AD08, 285/30/18
Dunlop Star Spec, 265/35/18
Bridgestone Potenza RE-11, 265/35/18
Bridgestone Potenza S-02, 265/35/18
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, 265/35/18
What do you think? Will the extra width of the Yokohama be good or bad in a 3-lap sprint?
*edited* - the Hankook and Toyo are not allowed. . .
