First Oil change and transmission grind

I have a brand new 2014 Evo X and the dealer recommended my first oil change to be at 3,500 is this too long? I put 2,500 miles so far. When should I change my first oil? Been driving it normal don't hit over 4k rpm just daily cruising probably boost once or twice at 500-1000 miles. Boost is 4,500 rpm right?

Another problem, its a brand new Evo X but I'm having hard time shifting into 3rd and 4th sometimes. It won't go into gear. Also when I shift it sounds like grinding u can hear the noise at each shift when it goes into gears. Is this normal it's still breaking in? How many miles before shifting will be smooth and the sound will go away? Thanks for any help.

Well it's not like a clunk sound when shifting its just not smooth like I can feel the movement of the ball on the shifter moving into gears. Also, is it good enough for the oils to seat?

When changing the fluids for the first time, are you supposed to do just oil or oil and transmission? I'm at that point as well and need to take mine in... Also should you only go to a Mitsubishi dealership so they have all records of maintenance in order to ensure no warranty drama?

I did my trans at ~1000 and the drain plug had shavings. If you have the dealer do it, see if they'll let you do the Redline Cocktail as it did help smothen my shifts up

Here's what I did. I don't plan on doing the transmission oil again for another 30K miles.

first engine oil ~500 miles (used Mobil1 5W30)

first transmission oil ~10,000 miles (used AMSoil 75W90)

So does changing transmission oil to redline will smooth my shift or Evo X just like that? It's quite annoying not going into gear sometimes like from 2nd to. 3rd when it don't go in I blip the throttle or sometimes have to put in neutral then shift it into 3rd. Don't think I drove any brand new manual car that happen like this Evo X makes it unpleasant now.

I have a 2014 GSR and never experience what you are describing. Take it to your dealership and have them check out and test your transmission. I never have trouble going into 3rd it slides right in. Do I think the factory transmission could benefit from some bushings? Sure. But the only notchiness I notice with mine is when it is cold going into first is a bit sticky, but I just put it back to neutral if it's not playing nice, clutch in once and put it back in and it goes right in.

Hit up your dealership and let us know how it turns out. I don't think you need to put in some aftermarket transmission oil just to drive the car normally, at least I didn't have to and don't think anyone should...

First off, your car has SN rated conventional oil. You want to change it now. I recommend Mobile 1 full synthetic. Mitsubishi will cover a portion of that, then you pay the difference. So, whoever told you 3,500 doesn't know what the hell they're talking about, lol.

Secondly, break in, per the owners manual, is only 500 miles. BTW, the car should be making full boost around 3400 RPMs, depending on weather and elevation.

Finally, all Evo's have notchy shifters. My guess is that this is more noticeable when the car has first started?
This will fix that.

Also helps slightly with a weighted knob. It's not going to be smooth like butta but it helps a little.

Thanks for all feedback. So if I'm in a rush to work and I start up the car am I suppose to start shifting before 3,500? I know the oil has to be hot enough before u can boost just never knew full boost was at 3,500. Since I didnt know will I do any damage to the car as I been just shifting before 4k when I take off to work.

I ask the dealer guy told me that's its normal about shifter and that I need to put more miles on it then it be smooth duno if its true what you guys think?

yeah it's normal, and also normal for almost any sports car.

You can shift whenever you want to, the car won't let you hurt it

I stay out of boost (switch around 3k) until the car is fully warmed up.

I recently changed out the items TrogdorWBL posted a link for. The only one I didn't change was the shift knob cause I like my aluminum oem knob. Doing this helped out alot. But it was still a little knotchy. Felt more like a quick double tap tap as I shifted gears. Hard to explain I guess. But now that it is cold outside, the knotchiness has increased.

I have a 2014 GSR with 1,200 miles on it and I've noticed the shifter has a stiff feel to it, but I've never had a problem getting it into gear. Every once in a while it doesn't like to go into reverse after startup but I just play with it a little (go first gear, blip gas, then reverse) and it's fine.

I actually kind of like the "mechanical" feel of the shift lever. A little different than other manuals I've driven, but it feels sturdy and more rigid. Makes it feel a little more like a high end sports car with slotted gear box.

As far as the oil change is concerned, I plan on changing my oil at 2,500 miles and going to full synthetic from dealership. Probably won't do the other fluids until 15,000 miles or if mechanics notice anything.
