I have a 2012 GSR i bought in August, car is most stock except Tial Q BOV and ETS UICP. I don't know if the car had tune up or not and the car runs fine. Couple days ago i got ETS intake, now, how long can i drive with the intake with out tune up? i plan on getting DP and then full tune, but till then am i safe with the intake and no tune? plus where i live(Michigan) don,t have place to tune, thought about AMS in Chicago..please advice....thanks you guys

Yeah you're fine. You can do a lot of bolt-ons before you have to get a tune.

A tune will void your warranty, but I've heard it depends on the dealership.

A tune should only void certain aspects of your warranty. They cannot outright void an entire warranty, unless the modification directly affects the warranty claim.

That being said, yes, you are fine driving on the ETS intake without a tune. It uses the stock MAF housing, so that negates the need for an immediate tune. However, if you had gotten say, an AMS intake which replaces the stock MAF housing, you would need a tune on it immediately.

If you don't have anywhere to get a tune done, consider one of the great e-tuners on the forums here. Get your mods done, and get a tactrix cable to use with a laptop and just have them send you a map. Or, a Cobb AP can do the same thing if the tuner will tune it.

Good luck with the modding!

I've never had to deal with warranty work, but I assume it is up to the dealership's discretion whether the modification "directly" affected the claim.

that makes me feel better, My warranty expires at 35000 miles or next year, and i am thinking about e-tune, the nearest place for me to tune would be 2.5 hours drive to AMS in chicago..

The Magnuson-Moss warranty act "protects" us from some such discretionary decisions. They technically have to prove that the mod affects the claim. That isn't to say, however, that they won't deny your claim anyway...as I imagine it is a pain to fight such a denial...

2.5 hours isn't bad for a good tune, but AMS is expensive

My 2012 came with 36K Bumper to Bumper and I believe 60K drivetrain. I cant remember if 2010 or 2012 was the first model year where they put these new increased warranty terms into effect to compete with the other OEMs.
Funny enough my dealer here in Houston has this Lifetime Warranty on the powertrain if you do all your services at the dealership.

Since most mods add HP and TQ they will be able to just blame any drivetrain issues on the larger than stock HP and more so TQ figures. If they feel like it anyways.
