My STI blew a ringland, going to look at an Evo MR, concerns?
2 years, 20,000 miles, 0 problems. Bone stock MR daily driven. I too was worried about reliability and had always heard the Evo was a pos. Having said that, there's no way I would buy a used one, but many would debate that.

I have a 2010 X SE/SST with just over 20k miles, still stock (for now). Zero problems. I also have an '09 Ralliart/SST with over 90k miles...stock...zero problems (2nd owner). "Oh cool you have high miles and no problems but you're stock."
About to build mine in a month or so...going to do full bolt ons: 3.5" FMIC/piping, 3.5" intake, dump downpipe, testpipe, single exit, AMS TMP cams/beehive springs/retainers, possibly fuel pump and injectors...in other words ALOT of power over stock, and I'm not concerned.
HEAT is the real enemy of the SST, but that level of heat usually only crops up at the track, and then it's dependent on driver. If you overhead the SST on the street you should be in JAIL at ANY power level.
The SST is a tough nut, it's being worked on as we speak and major things are about to happen, its not gonna be fun to have a GSR once we figure out the SST tuning capabilities, which no one really knows yet. So far the answer has been "clutch packs, trans coolers, upgraded fluid" to "fix" a problem that no one really understands. It's all about heat, friction, and PRESSURE in the lines. If tuning can fix some of that then you save money on clutches and coolers etc. The trans is an ANIMAL...gotta be driven to be appreciated. I came from Subaru where I had a "stage 2+" 03 WRX and I was sceptical about the SST...once I took a very slow test drive I was already sold...today, 3 years later, I still love every second of it.
The SST "limits" as we know them are around the same point as the factory injectors, fuel pump, turbo, and rods....so once you start pushing 380-400 awtq (not hp) you will need to do some serious upgrades to those components. I won't be at that point even with what I have planned, or will detune to be safe, and that will be a REALLY fun street car and occasional track car.
Unless you are familiar with the SST I wouldn't buy a used one.

I've had my 2008 MR since I bought it in May 2010 @ 12,000 miles. It's now approaching 37,000 miles. From Jul 2011- Sep 2013 it was in government storage. I've never tracked it but have driven it like I stole it on more than one occasion, and driven it cross-country as well. You can see my modest mods in my sig. I just started driving it again as I'm home in the States for a few weeks.
This is my complete list of problems in almost 4 years of ownership:
1. Warped front rotors sometime in the first 6 months. Replaced them with Girodisc 2-pieces and haven't looked back.
2. Bad alignment led to the rear driver tire wearing down to the wire on my cross country drive (March 2011). New tires + alignment = problem solved.
3. Just recently the stock head unit's CD player stopped working.
That's it. Utterly reliable. And it's a blast to drive. The only things I miss compared to my RWD 5-speed Chaser are clutch-dump u-turns and related tail-happy jackassery. I'm really dreading the idea of selling it to buy another JDM replacement (some of the early TC-SST X's in Japan are as low as $17k, but they look like they are full of problems).

Bought my MRT new in 2010
kept her stock for 59k miles late last year.
did the big oil service filter change.
modded her to 340whp 370wtq mustang
just hit 78k miles yesterday
NO ISSUES!
95% of the time since i bought her she changed her own gears.
my wife drove her first two years, always she told me in normal mode
Honestly my old EVO 8 and now my EVO X are the most trouble free cars I ever had. (As long as you maintain her properly she will last forever)
Cant wait to hit 100k miles
If you buy used and don't know the owner take her to a reputable tuner and tell them to go over any mods and the tune.
