I Hate The 4 - 5 Gear Ratio Gap!
The longer 5th gear was thrown in by Mitsu for the following reasons:
1) Official highway MPG, just so it doesn't suck that bad.
2) Highway cruising speed.
3) Doesn't affect performance that much. How often/how long are you in 5th during autox (the more popular autosport)
4) For those with the money to competitively drag race/track, you can change out the gear or final drive.

There was a post a while ago linking to a Mitsu tech document (not sure if that's what it's called), with a section where they kind of explained the characteristics of the 5 speed trans, and part of that doc addressed the "high speed" cruising speed/rpm and better resultant MPG.
URL or it didn't happen. As of now, it sounds like BS to me. It would have been just as easy to say that they did it because they wanted 1 through 4 to be close for rallying on gravel and then threw in a high 5th for transit. But I'm not going to claim to know why Mitsu did it without being ready to back it up.
ps. it's called a "white paper"

Guess I missed that part. It's good he test drove it and discovered it wouldn't work for his needs without regearing. No reason to complain about the gearing though, just move on and get something else.
