Drivetrain 'clunking'. Doh!
While I can't disagree with the claim that it's been said that driving with an inactive pump is bad, this hereI completely dispute the idea that it's bad. Based on both experience and an understanding of how the system works, I can say with high confidence that driving around with a dead pump or the fuse pulled won't hurt anything.
Ok Ok, bust seriously, not having an ayc pump active doesn't hurt the car. All it does is not give you the intricate super all wheel control that the x's have. You'll be running open diffs. Some argue that what is the point in owning an X if you don't have it running at its full capability, others are just tired of, or don't want to replace the pump and spend the money to replace it. Again.

If we're going to go OT and talk about motivation, etc, I'll say that I believe that you're just repeating stuff you've seen on the internet and have no idea why driving with the pump unplugged or dead could harm anything. I'll also say that I care about the issue because I've been driving for 10 months with no pump and will probably continue for some time to come.

Running without a pump or with the pump unplugged is exactly described by saying that you're driving around with two open diffs.
