Where to start with MR
Where to start with MR
I have a 2008 Evo X MR. Had it just over a year now and looking into light modification. Been lurking and reading the forums, and see this question is asked a lot but would like some input.
My car is stock completely, only visual mods done to it so far (e.g. mudflaps)
What I want is to keep Daily Driver feel. Prefer to keep OEM engine / turbo so nothing to invasive. Not sure how much HP gain I can get without doing that.
I was looking into doing ETS intercooler / pipes and intake as well as exhaust kit. Then a pro tune with it. Not sure if this is best place to start with the mods though.
Also read with SST, I'd have to look into upgrading tranny for any real gains, but is it possible to get around 400hp without upgrading turbo/ SST??
Any input or direction / guidance would we really helpful. First car I've owned that modding it would be worth it so pretty much a noob haha.
***Key point; I live near Vancouver B.C so E85 is pretty much out of the question as we don't have enough gas stations with the fuel to make it worth it. (That I know of).
Also Budget is around 6k... so that might constrain it quite a bit.

They say you can attain 350 whp without upgrading the SST.After that if you want more power it will need the Transmission Cooler.I am certainly not an expert, but after much searching through this website,I purchased the AMS STX 300 it will arrive hopefully this week.I have a 2010 Mr,I have been wanting to mod it for awhile now.If this cobb accessport thing doesn't turn out all that great then I will do the full bolt on stuff with a tune.
We sell this package a ton to Evo X MR and GSR customers.

and

You can use the Cobb tune and change the intake scaling (video on how to do this, it's really straight forward).
You will be sitting around 350-360 on the MR. The GSR is usually around 360-370.
Hope this helps! Any questions, let me know!

The only thing different is that I plan to go to a shop that tunes the SST as well, to get it all working perfectly with a Pro Engine and SST Tune.
Nothing wrong with the COBB AP(I have one now for my stock MR), just want that extra peace of mind a protune gives ya. You'll have to do some research to see who in Vancouver actually and truly knows about the SST and how to tune it.
With a $6K budget you can get the parts and a Complete Tune no problem. Spend the leftovers on a clearbra and a Go Pro.
As a follow up here is a quote by Kozmic in Houston TX about the SST from this thread : https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...estions-2.html

Just to bring some light into the thread...
The SST is just as capable as the GSR in STOCK form. Actually we can get more power from the SST trans in stock form than what the GSR stock clutch can handle.
Keep in mind all that it takes to have a stout (500whp+) SST is keeping up with the oil service (including a first service before 10k if possible), a clutch upgrade (which is not much more if not cheaper than a twin disk for a GSR), and a solid transmission tune (we only charge an additional $50 to setup the trans while tuning the rest of the car).
You will find that most claims of the SST being weaker than the stock engine or only holding XXX power claims are generally made from people or shops who have not done the above, who have no experience or want to steal your money.
They all work together as well, meaning if you dump all the money you can into the best parts for the SST and the rest of your car then take it to a tuner that does not have the correct experience to tune every aspect of the car, you can QUICKLY fry all those new parts you just put in. We have seen this many times before, sometimes as quick as only lasting a tuning session.
Some of this is a moot point however as the OP has an SST. So to the OP, your mod list looks good. Add a fuel pump, fuel pump relay and DV as stated before. The 30r on gasoline you will not need a clutch upgrade if you follow the other 2 steps I listed above (Fluid and good tuner). Off the top of my head I cannot think of any tuners I would recommend up there. For E-tuning I would get ahold of Mike @ MTuned or Beeble Tuning as I would trust either of them to tune our shop's MR. Feel free to contact us by email, etc for any insight you may want when selecting parts, etc for the build we are happy to help.

I have full bolt ons with the exception of a Downpipe on my 2010 MR. I got tuned by 5150 Racing (Bakaunchi). I put down 305/325 on a mustang dyno. Car runs fine. Still on stock injectors and such.
