Exclamation Picking up an X for once..

Hey guys, So next week I'll be picking up a 2012 X GSR. I used to always be completely against them because of the new engine.. and the design that somewhat looks identical to the base lancers.. and ralliarts.. etc. But they began to grow on me over this year and I decided to go for one after the 4b11t has proved itself to me as a great motor.

I've owned plenty of evo's from the 3,4,5,6,8 and a few talons :P Being in Canada is definitely a plus to owning JDM evo's. There's a certain feel to them that the USDM's can't give. And I'm a huge 4G63 fan.. so switching to the new 4b11t just wasn't my thing. Ever since they brought the X out in 08. But being around them more and more from my friends made me a bit more comfortable and I respect them a lot more from builds that I've been watching.

Anyways, So this one was a pain in the *** to obtain from the dealer that it was at.. The Mitsubishi dealer in my city is a bunch of scumbags that know sh*t all about evo's and like to lie about stuff..

When I first looked at it, I noticed front rotors had some heat rash/marks from being driven hard and the rear pads were an easy 3/4mm left of pad.. Then this thing just has the weirdest scratches on the body.. but they aren't bad. Also the windshield was cracked and scratched horribly and the clutch was a stage 2 and recently done before it was sold to the dealer. I looked at the inspection sheet and the tech called the back brakes being at 8mm (lol?), the windshield being good, front rotors were "apparently" machined.. (weren't even removed from the vehicle..) So I told the service manager to call out another tech and he agreed with everything I was saying.. so they had a very long talk with the tech that worked on it before hand lol

She has 63,000kms on her, Shifts nice, love the clutch, drives great, pulls hard etc. Anyways, after a lot of discussion and giving them more knowledge than they can handle on a vehicle they own.. I managed to get them down from their ridiculous price of $36,000 CAD to $33,000 with a full detail and some paint care done for the scratches and they're replacing the windshield.. But my main concern is; Should I go with extended warranty? Or are these motors just as reliable for good ol' evo beatings like the 4G63? I'm taking it to California at the end of this month.. So I'm HOPING everything goes smooth. I do want to mod her out a bit over time.. but I've heard a lot of horror stories on mitsu not honoring warranty and rejecting some expensive stuff even if the vehicle is really close to stock.

All of my evos in which I have owned have NEVER had any major break downs or issues. Always small things like plugs needing to be changed or the IAC valve getting dirty.. noisy AYC.. But the 4B11T is still a tad new to me.

There is no way I'd buy a car with this many weird factors and not get some sort of extended warranty.

40k on the clock is plenty of time to have racked up some abuse, and from what you described it has at least seen a little.

Shop around and see what kind of price you can get... Any aftermarket parts or weird issues in it's vehicle history?

I'd probably take the extended warranty depending on wich mod you wanna do on your evo until the time the warranty will end. Because i've seen some people say that it is kind of a bit less reliable than the 4g63, so it can't really hurt to have that warranty on your back!

Only aftermarket parts is the Stage 2 clutch. Otherwise she seems solid.. but I know what you're saying. It's definitely been bagged and beat on hard and I mentioned it to them before buying. The lowest they'll go is 33k with the Paint touch ups and windshield.

If you get a decent warranty the price is pretty good considering you are in Canada. It's ridiculous how much more cars go for up there...

Haha no kidding! Decent Evo 8's are only 15-18k in USA, but in Canada they go for around 20-25k

Oh ok so thats what it is. I was wondering why a 2012 evo x with 40k was selling for 36k. here you can get a NEW 2014 for 36k.

But yeah def get a warranty and see if they will still honor it with bolt on modifications.

What about that makes it more reliable??? lol

To the OP:
1) lol to thinking the x looks too much like the base model lancer or ralliart... That's always been the case, you're just used to spotting the difference in the past models.

2) The 4b11t is just like the 4g63, it's reliable as long as it isn't pushed beyond the limits. Given the replaced clutch, did you see any signs of other power modifications? If it appears to have been returned to stock then you could be buying into a headache. But if it looks clean with just a clutch upgrade then that could be a great pickup.

I thoroughly looked her over and saw no signs of anything being replaced from aftermarket. But I did score the total vehicle $2000 cheaper, new windshield and brakes, paint touch ups and 4 years of refundable warranty for $2000 rather than $4500. I did a lot of talking and arguing for this hahaha. But they were definitely generous in the end after I justified the reasons.

Look underneath it. Is it thoroughly scarred up? It may have been a rally racer. If so, I'd think 3x before buying it.

Low mileage for a clutch replace (on a 'stock' car/power levels) and it would explain the scratches and windshield I would imagine...

It was a vehicle from just out of town, but i have full warranty coverage on her so i could care less about the engine for now. Might just blow it up later then build on the new one lol. And the bottom was good. "Skid plates" were all still there. No cracks or major gouges. Scratches on the W/S are most likely from a window scraper in winter.
