New clutch problem?
New clutch problem?
Okay so I just bought a 2014 Evo x gsr today with 2050 miles on it. They delivered it to me and I drove it around a bit and all seemed fine. By the way the original owner had it, his wife was driving it and messed up the original clutch. Since his wife was driving and messed up the clutch from not knowing how to drive a standard they replaced it with a factory clutch and he decided to get a regular Lancer.
Long story short I was driving around and started getting into fifth gear and it grinds 80 percent of the time. I called the lady at the dealership and said what was happening and she said it's because the clutch has less than 100 miles on it and has to be broken in. I don't know a ton about that but is this true? Everything I looked up said bad synchro possibly but surely not on a car with 2k miles.
She assured me whatever it is it will be covered and made right but I'm a bit worried since I just spent 36k and love this car but this is a really bad start I feel like.
Does anyone know what's going on and if it really is the clutch? If so, how do I properly break it in? I don't see a new clutch doing this in 5th only.

I bought my 14 x with 6 miles on it and learned to drive stick on it. I don't recall any 5th gear grinding. Just the 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 gear grinds are what people seem to normally report if I remember correctly.
When I got my car it grinded a lot but usually only from 1-2 and 2-3. Maybe cuz it sat on the lot for awhile? but after a few months of DD it doesn't really grind anymore. Hope this helps. im no mechanic though lol
My car didn't grind into 5th.
Either way, they said they would cover it. Just make sure they provide you written documentation that it will be covered and you'll be fine.
I have to ask: at $36k why didn't you just buy a new one?

Well this one had sight sound leather sunroof interior package, lighting etc. was about 41k plus TTL. So i got a decent deal on it and like I said everything is absolutely perfect condition except one wheel has a small amount of curb rash and then the grinding in 5th.

Yes the dealer is making me an appointment to bring it in. Their service manager said it sounds like synchros could be damaged a bit and it will be covered under warranty. So hopefully it doesn't take them long to replace it!
There's a thread on here that talks about using cocktail fluid which apparently makes the grinding less intense. Anyways, on that thread, I remember someone else talking about their 5th gear grinding as well, mine only grinds in 2nd and 3rd gear.
If the clutch install wasn't done properly the clutch might not be completely releasing, causing the grind. That's an install error though, and driving it more won't fix it, it will only wear the synchros more.
this^^
clutch is not related to the gears actually. if you're grinding into 5th the the 5th gear synchros might be messed up/rounded off maybe trying to squeeze some extra miles out of a mostly dead clutch and just kinda jamming it into the gears.
it's a really strong transmision though...can you post a video sound clip of the grinding? Evo's are kinda noisy after all and it might just be the normal clunkiness they have going on.

I took it to the dealership and they said its the synchros. Looks like it should be covered though and everything will be alright. Just looks like ill be out of my car for a little bit which sucks since i just got it. Glad its going to get taken care of though so I can start enjoying it
