SST Question

Hello everyone,
OKay, so before everyone just says look at this thread or that thread I want to start off my saying, I believe I have read almost every thread out there about SST issues to include other sites and open source reporting...

Here is whats happening to me and I want to see if anyone else has seen this one...

When i'm in sport manual and i'm coming to a red light and I let the car downshift on its own to 2nd gear and lets say the light turns green and I start to give the car gas (like the the car is at 1800RPMs and i go to like 2500RPMs) and it will up shift to 3rd and sometimes 4th on its own... I talked to the dealer and they said "no lights on the dash, no worries, they are complicated trans and they do funny things"... I do have an AP v3 with a stage 1 on the car so I called cobb and they said shouldn't make a difference and they have only seen this once before on a heavily modded car..If I downshift the car in the same event the car is normal and will not upshift. Also if the car is in auto it doesn't do this.

Like i said just wanted to see if anyone else has head of this and or had a fix. IM going to pull the AP when i get back in town and see what happens.

Honestly you should be driving around in S-Sport manual all the time, in order to prolong your clutch life. I do this even in traffic because it is so effortless with the paddle shifters.

What 'mode' are you in? If normal, I have noticed that the car is extremely 'low key' when in normal and will sometimes choose a higher gear than I normally would when accelerating as you described, kind of 'between gears' unless I really mash the accelerator.

If you are just barely touching the gas, I think what you are experiencing is normal. Then again, I feel that your 'normal' should be:

- Drive in S-Sport manually all the time
- At stop lights or long stops in traffic, toss it into neutral

That's the 'best' way to drive the MR, and improve clutch life. It will also allow you to be in the gear you are intending without question and always ready to rock and roll if needed.

I am usually in manual "Sport" like 99% of the time. The other 1% i'm in manual "normal" mode to let everything warm up.. I just find it odd that the car will up shift on its own with the SST i in Manual and in "sport" mode... But I guess if there aren't any warning lights then its all good.... Thanks for the input, it did this on my way into work today so i put it in "S-Sport" and downshifted the car on my own when i came to a stop...

You don't need to warm up things to put it in S-Sport. I literally put it into S-Sport while I'm putting on my seatbelt. You can even start changing the setting before the display is fully active to speed things up. The warming up is more keep it under 2k until you have a couple bars on your temperature then a bit longer to let the SST get up to temp.

I'm so sensitive to the SST now 'Normal' and 'Sport' make me cringe because I can feel the slipping of the clutch and I so enjoy the crisp fast shifting of the S-Sport.

Honestly Normal and Sport just generate unnecessary wear and heat in the transmission so I avoid them at all costs.

All good I didn't know when I got mine at first either. Then I spoke extensively to a pro with the SST that runs a shop down here, Kozmic Motorsports, and he gave me more information on the SST than I thought possible. Even showed me around his shop and the various components of the tranny.

So all the things I suggest are from his mouth and I share them whenever possible because he knows more about the SST than anyone I can think of lol.

Good luck and enjoy. This is solid advise from the master, and I adhere to it every time I turn the key.

P.S. He also recommended changing your SST fluid before 3000 miles to remove any breakin debris which I did, then change it out every 30k thereafter. Not sure what your mileage is or anything, but something to keep in mind.

At stock power levels you can (or at least i have) beat on the car a good deal with no issues. Its the high horsepower cars or cars with **** tunes that are breaking things. (excluding the ACD/AYC pump of course....that POS fails if you look at it wrong)

Maintenance is the key factor here. Especially with the SST. I have seen a few SST cars at over 100K, and in speaking with the owners the common service intervals are -

Engine oil/filter every 3/5K (Mitsu recommends 3k i think)
Spark Plugs every 20K
SST filter change every 5K
SST fluid/filter changed every 20K (debatable - some do 30K)
Diff oils every 30K
Fuel pump relay every 30K (this may have changed with the newer version..IDK)
Serpentine belt every 30 K

This is by no means a fully inclusive list, just some common things i have seen high mileage SST owners do.

Wouldnt you have to do these two at the same time?? Or is there another filter like a trans breather that you are talking about at 5k??

The filter im referring to is the stock external paper filter. You can change it without doing a full fluid change. Just unscrew the filter housing, pull the old filter, drop in the new one, reattach filter housing, done.

Even with filter changes every 5k, the filter is black and nasty. The pic below is from my last filter change....has about 6K on it.

No way i would use that. The stock paper one filters to a much finer micron that the stainless one. And its the really small particles you should worry about. The "larger" pieces of friction material will be caught by both filters, but the really fine stuff that builds up in the valve bodies and gums them up will only be caught with the paper one.

I forget exactly what the filtration ratings are, but i think the stainless filter has 10x larger openings than the paper filter.

EDIT - I would be wary of anything from SSP.

Stick with Kozmic. They are the gods of the SST.

I wasn't aware of needing to change that filter that frequently, nor did they recommend that to me when I was there talking with them...

Not saying it isn't necessary, but it might not be required at such extreme intervals. (every 5k)

Maybe every 5k is more than most need. But seeing my filter after just 6k (all street miles, no track) the $40 every couple of months seems worth it to me.

I usually do engine oil/filter changes @ 5k so i do the SST filter at the same time.
