Depends on your goals. I have had both and I say MR. The shifting is supernatural, and with a minimum of mods it is the most ridiculous car I've driven. (and I've owned and driven some good cars).

That being said, if big power is your goal, the GSR would be a better fit.

Downsides to GSR - 5 speed and geared for autocross, so very short gears. This means on the highway you will be running around 3500 rpm's at 65. So you can see this would get a bit rough for longer trips at higher speeds.

The MR has higher maintenance as well. That being said I had a 2014 GSR and a 2014 MR back to back after my GSR got trashed shortly after I bought it. If I had to walk onto the lot tomorrow and buy one, it would be the MR. I have access to a great tuner for them however. If I didn't, the GSR would edge it out because it can work well with an Accessport for tuning, the MR is not good with one.

Why do you need to tune it? Because honestly, in stock form, it's a tiny bit lacking. That being said, whichever one you get, drop in a Cosworth panel air filter, change nothing else, and the car will feel much much better. The stock air filter is horrible and accentuates the rich stock factory tune, and not in a good way. Tuned, these cars are crazy good, just heavy on gas consumption if you are lead footed.

Good luck with your decision, hope this made sense.

Yes, thanks for taking the time and educating me with this information. I believe I might get the MR, But modding the MR isn't it much more expensive compared to the GSR?

only thing more expensive than the GSR is when you need to fix the SST transmission or change its clutch. The exhaust, intake, injectors, fuel pump... bolt-on parts are the same.

if you like rowing the gears yourself then get the GSR. Nothing will match that feeling. In the MR, people said you can shift with the two plastic sticks on both sides of the steering, that's not exactly correct. You're not actually shift but tell it to shift.

Since you're in SoCal, the SST in the MR can be nice sometimes when you need to park the car on the 405 freeway. But if you want quick response and rowing the gears yourself then get the GSR. In a linear gears shift, the MR can do that faster than you manual can do, but when you need to skip gears then you may find the manual in the GSR better.

I have both so I like to share the experience with you.

I'm a lifelong die hard stickshift driver, and the MR won me over. I'll leave that there. It's super human fast shifting. Only gets more expensive to mod the MR past basic boltons and over 350 torque when you need bigger clutch packs. Honestly, I just did the basic boltons and it is scary fast. I can't imagine needing more for city streets. And I've had 450hp Cobra's in my past, so I know fast lol.

G20, with all due respect, you are talking about the MR and really have no idea. (not trying to be mean, being honest) If I am running up on a stopped car or pile of cars, I can blip down 3 gears inside of a second, try that in a stickshift. Shifts in the MR happen in miliseconds.

The reason me, as a lifelong stickshift die hard, went with the MR is that it could do everything I would want to do, better, faster, and smoother. I can drive this thing like satan himself and it is a blast. Do I enjoy driving stick? Absolutely, but if you want maximum performance and blistering shifting, there isn't a better car in the range than the MR.

I did that MR SST manual shifting all the times, 2 blips 3 blips... In my case, I never got the response or quickness that I want as in my other manual Evo. Now, if I leave it in the Super-Sport mode and simply let it shift itself, I agree that it does much better in most of the cases. But when in the sport or super-sport mode and driving normal, you always have to use the manual shifting, otherwise you'll not like the ways the RPMs hold and the rev-matching of it. I didn't say I didn't like it but just a different experience that the op may need to know.

Drove a friend stock MR, pretty much the same shift feeling when in manual mode. If the OP get the MR with some powers added and want to drive it hard, he may need to invest into a trans cooler because I found it can be overheated easily and need to cool down.

Are we talking about the same car? 2014 EVO X here, I experience none of what you are describing. I drive the car hard, never had an overheat issue, and it's crazy fast shifting even faster after I tuned it.

Oh well, good luck OP, just drive one for yourself. When you test drive one, get it up to temp then put it in S Sport mode. Push up once to put it into sport, then once more to put it into S Sport then go driving using the paddles to shift.

Good luck

Well! How many kind of Evo that you think having the auto? I don't understand that question. My X SST never overheated but had been witnessed one so I just like to pass that info to the op and it's up to him. Mine is not but I don't assume anyone else the same.

MR.

And by a wide margin. For me at least.

I regretted the color so much (GG).

If I could do it again id go with an aero equipped MR in silver.

But I won't because this GSR is the last Evo I'll ever buy.

I think.

I think it depends where you live and your goal. If you are in an urban area and deal with stop and go traffic on a daily basis, I would get an MR. If you are only driving mostly on rural roads, I would go with a GSR as you can enjoy it more. If your goal is all out performance, I would also go for a GSR as its lighter, cheaper, and easier to mod.

I own a GSR and a buddy owns an MR. I don't get it. Sure, if you're actually going to track the car, and I mean road racing, then grab an MR, but for every other instance rowing your own gears is gratifying. I would buy something a bit more luxurious if I wanted an automatic.

This thread is not helping me with my decision. There are definite pros and cons with each. My problem is that I like to drag race and the SST is definitely quicker. On the other hand manual is way more fun to drive 90% of the time, but... My wife can't deive stick. Also, I am hoping for big power eventually and the SST costs more to cope with all that power.....decisions decision.....

You're going to have to test drive both honestly. My IX SE was a blast at 542whp but I went from rotating shift to days and the twin clutch, motor mounts, etc. made it so bad I hated driving it as a daily. Had some back issues and it was getting harder for me to shift (nerve block left leg) so sold it. I was determined to never get a X, especially an MR. In normal auto, it felt OK. In s-sport manual I quickly got use to it. I've had 5 speeds my entire life and my MR is the best of both worlds.Big power is nice and even though it was as reliable as I could make it daily driving was more hectic than anything. Daily and my wife can drive-MR hands down for me. A weekend fun play car, a built IX SE. Tough choice to make over the Internet, check them out and see what you like. Good luck.
