Suspension upgrade list
Suspension upgrade list
I am about to get my evo x back from the paint shop soon and was looking into doing my suspension in the next month or so. Anyone mind looking at my list and commenting if I'm missing anything or perhaps different preferences?
-Ohlin Coilovers
-Hotchkis rear sway bar
-Heavy duty rear end links
-Whiteline roll center kit
-I have some advan rs rims ready to go on too!!

Are you auto crossing the car? If not I wouldn't worry about end links. Everything else looks good. Just make sure you get a higher spring rate in the rear for the Ohlins. If I remember correctly they have a higher rate in the front, you'll want to higher in the rear
Pretty similar to what I have currently. Ohlins with higher rear spring rate (10k/10k), Eibach front and rear sway bar, Whiteline end links, and Whiteline roll center kit.
It's been a while since I had the car stock and I've gradually added pieces over time, so it's hard to gauge the changes. The coilovers obviously made the greatest impact. Brake dive and body roll are virtually absent in daily driving.
For autocrossing the front sway bar and high spring rates should combat the mcpherson struts' inherent disadvantages (poor camber changes under compression), you then also must stiffen up the rear to maintain desirable anti-roll distribution (front to rear). If you are going whole hog on your suspension I wouldn't leave out the front sway bar.
When it's all said and done you will have a rough, squeaky, loud ride; but it will be a blast to drive on an autocross course if you feed it the right tires.

Yes to the custom spring rates. You can order through a place like Meullerized and he will assemble the Ohlins for you with different spring rates for a small increase in price. Saves you the hassle of putting the coilovers together as well. Then you just slap them on the car and get an alignment.
Thanks for the replies. So 10k for front and rear is best? I believe 10k front and 7k rear are being sold on several websites. Let me know what you guys think.
-Thanks again. Also how much louder, clunkier was the ride with the ohlins?

Yea many coilovers out of the box have a not so good spring rate for some reason for the evo. Most people do go the 10k/10k way. Some other people will say another option would be 10k/12k would be better, but with either one of those set ups you will be all good!
There probably isn't a best spring rate, depends on other factors. A square setup is just a good starting point. I believe the rear motion ratio isn't too far off of the front (i.e. The impact of the leverage of the suspension control arms on the effective spring rate). The rear suspension decreases the effective spring rate but not as much as in prior Evo's.

i'll vote for "it depends on what you are doing with the car".
on one end of the spectrum you have performance, with comfort on the other. you gotta figure out how far and which way you want to go.
Ohlins, in general, are a GREAT street coilover that also does well at the track. they have a nice balance.
as for the other stuff, they could be useful if you are going to competing, HPDE, etc...otherwise i can't say you would ever realize the benefit.
just my $.02, though. i don't believe in buying parts until absolutely necessary. it saves me a ton of money, but i admit it's not as fun LOL.
