Timing Chain Replacement Costs

Dear Forum Members,

I posted on this subject a little while back and didn't really get a lot of prices so I thought I'd try again. I just hit 70,000 miles on my 2010 Evo. I know the 90,000 service is a major service so I asked the guy at Mark Mitsubishi (Scottsdale, AZ) to give me a quote on how much the service will cost. The main part of the 90,000 is to replace the timing chain. The dealership quoted me $800 for the full 90,000 mile service. Some people said that was high but my wife just paid $860 for her timing belt service (new belt, tensioners, pulleys). Do you think this is a fair price? I will call around to other places to get quotes but I just want to know what most of you paid to have your timing chain replaced. Now I have heard people say to not worry about it until you get the warning light but I'm not that kind of person and want to do the scheduled services when they are actually due. So again, how much have you paid for your 90,000 mile service and/or getting your timing chain replaced?

Thank You,

Landon

I had my timing chain replaced on my 08 GSR without any warning lights at 45K miles and it had stretched so I was glad I did. I don't remember exact cost, but think it was in the $800 range to replace with the updated design. If they are replacing with the updated 2011+ design, the quote seems reasonable. I would definitely recommend checking with evo shops instead of dealer. I'm biased, but I try not to ever take my car to the dealer.

I just the chain on our Ralliart a few weeks ago. Took me about 6 hours in my home garage with hand tools. It's not terribly difficult to do yourself but you basically must take it to the dealer to have the timing chain learned value reset. They charged me $50 for that and parts were ~$250 (cheaper if you go aftermarket someplace like RockAuto). I'd say $800 for the timing chain and the rest of the 90k mile service is pretty fair.
