EVO ad and previous owner seemed a little suspicious
so i’ve been looking for an evo x for a little while now (6 months or so). i found one for a decent price (14,500cad) although the ad had been up for a while (7 weeks at time of message). i decided to message the guy and see if i could find out more. the car itself has 194,000kms on it and he had replaced the old engine with a new one that had around 75,000kms on it, this seemed sort of suspicious but i decided to keep going, he said that he put a hole in the old block which i know is not easy to do to a 4B11 even of that age (it’s an 08). i asked for more pictures of the car “close ups” “undercarriage” etc. and nothing seemed to be wrong; the paint was fine besides a few minor scratches, swirl marks etc. and there was no rust. We messaged back and forth a bit more and he said he’ll take 12,500 for it, now i’m stuck because i don’t know what kind of abuse the car has taken and what other damage might be hidden under the hood so i decided to ask here and see if anyone can give any advice, all is appreciated.
seems pretty normal to me, 2008 is probably the least desirable year for the evox and and the owner knows its harder to sell. If this was an evo 8/9 with the same story it would be a huge red flag. If it runs and drives without any noises, knocking or grinding then no matter the abuse it would still be worth the 12k imo.
Seems pretty normal to me. Its an 08 so 12,500 is a fair price for the car. Nothing wrong with replacing a blown motor.
Also most Evos are going to get abuse at some point in their life. Don't go to crazy worrying about
worse case scenario.
just buy one already. Evos are bulletproof cars they can take a lot of beating unlike most
cars.
If you want some extra assurance just pay for the pre purchase inspection.

The timing chain on the pre-2011 models was more prone to stretching, and the oiling system for the chain used an oil jet. The oil jet could be damaged by a stretched chain. They revised the chain and changed the oiling system to just use a hole in the block vs a jet.
