Purchasing Evo X in 2021 - 2022

Hey everyone

I've been wanting to get Evo X for quite a long time. Finally I'm in a position to afford one.

How reliable are those cars ? Can I still get parts five years after the purchase, around 2026 ?

How expensive is the maintenance on those? I'm in hybrid work environment and have to visit office few times a week, so I'll be putting around 200 miles a week.

I found few MRs with around 30-40k miles for 34-38K in what seems to be pretty decent shape. Is it still worth purchasing one in 2021/2022 ?

I'm looking for an everyday sports car under $40k, and the only reason I consider Evo X is because I grew up watching WRC and Evo was my favorite car there, and dreamt of owning one growing up

Would it be a better to get a newer Golf R or Cicic Type R or Lexus IS350F, those are newer cars with a good reputation of being reliable

I've already had to improvise standard maintenance parts for My Evo X. I have no idea what its gonna look like in 5 years. We might get lucky, and they launch a heritage program like Nissan has. Since mitsubishi is basically merging into Nissan. I wouldn't count on it though.

So I did the job 12/2020 and Coolant Hose PN 1310A532 was tagged as discontinued on all the websites and in the dealer system as well. I see that it is now available again ?? This is the second time I have seen that happen with something I need. First one being the door lock actuator being discontinued for like half a decade then magically it becomes available. I wonder if it will be the same for the evo 8 head that recently went "discontinued", or the gas tanks.

Would you Golf R over Focus RS? I just could never bring myself to buy a VW 0.o

1000% yes. I would buy a Fiesta ST over a Focus RS. I've actually owned two Fiesta ST's in my life and I loved them.

I was anti-vw for a long time but the MK7 is a great platform. I own a MK7 GTI and a MK7 Golf AWD wagon and they are really great cars.

For track use I would pick something else (and I have) but they make great street cars.

Gotcha. That does seem random. Mitsubishi does have a habit of marking this NLA when in fact they're just waiting for the back order to get large enough so that a production run makes sense. Or something like that.

Like the Evo8/9 transfercase and rear diff ring/pinion gear sets are currently NLA as well.

agreed. you live once.

you grew up loving the Evo, just like I did. I bought myself one so I wouldn't have to look back and wish I did. I couldn't be happier. just sitting in it, idling at a red light is a thrill I thought would never happen.

Everyone I know who has had a newer VW has had nothing but problems.....reliability is terrible....that alone would make me steer clear of a VW.....

That used to be, but the newer VW's have gotten a whole lot better. Thing is with European cars, you have to be on top of the maintenance and do it when its called for. Especially the DSG transmissions, if the service interval is every 40k, make sure you DO IT EVERY 40K, etc. But overall the quality is a lot better from even 10 years ago..

I think you're being smart to think about parts. I too an uneasy about how accessible parts will be in the next 5-10yrs.

Cool first post. No issues with mine. I would normally agree with you but the MK7's are a whole nother world compared to the gens before. My MK6's were piles.

MK8's are basically MK7's with some slight updates.

I've been daily driving my Evo X for nearly 8 years, putting 100k miles on her. When it comes to repairs, I have only replaced an AYC pump, a DRL bulb, the battery twice, and a relay 4 times (the fuel pump one). The 5MT shifter cable linkage popped off once (from the bushing) also, but it didn't cost anything to repair.
