Hey guys, this might be a dumb question. I have a 2015 STi and I don't like it anymore, I took it to just 2 track days and my piston rings cracked. I just got this replaced with a 70k km longblock but I'm expecting the engine to blow again.
My question is this: should I trade it for an 2008 EVO GSR? I feel that the STI isn't worth it the AWD understeers everywhere while the EVO has the ayc control.
My STI has 190k km, engine at 70k km
The EVO has 200k km
Thanks

I'm just surprised the username Subaru wasn't taken until October 2023

Haha true, I just spent in total 10k cad for everything. Longblock, turbo, clutch, cv axle + labor + tax. I used to like cars but now I hate every car that exists in this planet, especially that I have no faith in this STi, it will probably blow up next monthOriginally Posted by RobbieOh
I think you will get biased answers here. Evo is life.

I am surprised too, I thought surely someone has taken this name to troll this forum. I guess it's an honor to have this username lolOriginally Posted by Kevin.

I can't find anything that Subaru is better at. I always hear "But Subaru has a boxer engine and the center of gravity is lower". So what? Evo always had superior drive system that made such a huge difference that it just was handling better than Subaru. For me Subaru STI engines are among the worst engines ever. From the design principal you have pistons moving transversely. To lube them properly is impossible task, you always start with upper part of piston waiting until it gets properly lubed. For the same reason, the pressure on the head gasket is distributed unevenly and the more power, the sooner it will burst. Not to mention the fact that it is an open block and the cylinders become deformed over time. I wont even mention how hard is to service this thing. Even spark plug change is painful and imagine if you need to pull out a piston. In Subaru it's always: engine out. I did my engine rebuild without even pulling it out of engine bay.
In my country, there are about 90% more Subaru owners than Evo owners. I have many friends that do only Subarus and I think I heard about 2 that surpassed 500 HP and lasted more than a week

I see you’re in the GTA, the evo is going to be 100% better than your STI in every single aspect.
That being said, be weary of 200k evo’s. I work on these cars for a living and there’s a lot of clapped out examples of them out there. If they’ve been winter driven since 2007/2008, they’re going to be full of corrosion. Send me a DM with a link to the car you’re looking at and I can try to help you further.
high mileage can be great if they’ve been maintained and taken care of well. Mine has 270k with a 2007 build date and it’s one of the cleanest in the province, but, it doesn’t see winter and I clean it religiously every season, even the underbody.

Sure, here is the evo, it's from Quebec. You're right it might be clapped out since its 420hp at 200k already, I'm afraid the motor is about to blow. What prevents me from trading it right now is actually because I've sunk 10k cad into this STi and it has low mileage motor, new clutch, new turbo, new axles. And also that the evo is a 2008 model so I'm not sure about reliability at this age.Originally Posted by six40

You might find this odd coming from a subaru owner but I totally agree, the only thing I like about the STi over the EVO is the sound of the uel ej. My end goal is actually the evo because of the ayc system. Oh and I don't even think about doing any power mods at all, I would be lucky if it was a head gasket issue but the piston rings cracked. The subaru community countered this by rerouting the coolant to cylinder 4, gaslighting people into thinking that EJs are great engines. Every time an EJ is blown it's always "oh it's because you're abusing the car, you did a pull below 3k rpm (causes detonation), or you didn't check your oil levels before tracking". Why do they say this? The EJ's pistons are really really weak and you need to swap it out for forged pistons out of the factory if you want any durability. This means that I can't take it to the track or push it anywhere, which means the STi is completely useless? Cars really shouldn't be like this to the point where we blame the customers for lemon engines.Originally Posted by varv

Oh man avoid any and all Quebec cars like the ****ing plague. The amount of rust and shady **** you find there is biblical

I see, thanks, I plan to keep this STi until it blows again in maybe 2 years? then I'll buy an evo. Do they still make parts for evo 7? I'm asking since its about the same price as evo 10 and if it's cheaper then maybe evo 7.Originally Posted by six40

Lots of them are discontinued so you must count on those that are left in stock. I have friends in USA and I often send them new parts from Europe. Maybe your supplies are running low Originally Posted by Subaru

I’ve had both and I will say you may miss the 6spd, updated interior and trunk space on the STi, but that’s it. Everything else Evo hands down.
