Question Where to obtain switched/accy 12V supply from

Where is the best/safest place to obtain a switched (on with accessory position) supply in the X MR? I would ideally not like to splice off the nav.

If there is a how to on this, please direct me to it - I looked through all pages but couldn't find anything.

BTW, where is the request sub forum for the how-tos?

bust out a multimeter. Here is an easy access the cigarette lighter. I believe you can setup how it functions on the Navi.

While the ACCESSORY position is selected, very few things have power. The nav, radio, and maybe windows too. Lastly, possibly the cigarette lighter. (Not to confuse you, lots of other things have constant power regardless of where the key is. Your question was for the accessory position.) Ex - lights, flashers, beams, etc all are constantly energized... when the switch is on, of course.

In all honesty, the radio harness might be the only place. It's perfectly safe to splice wires as long as you're doing it correctly. Vampire clips or soldering are both okay.

I would go with soldering if your going to go the radio route. It ensures minimal if none at all problems.

I still haven't had luck obtaining a switched supply. I am unable to get access to any supply wires due to having problems taking apart the car! I had no problem taking apart my VIII but this car is giving me a headache.

I looked behind the panel to the right of the driver's right foot - nothing. I tried to remove the surround around the shifter and cigarette lighter (which I have done many times on my VIII) but I couldn't do it.

I tried to remove the panel to the left of the driver's left foot - couldn't get it off. I also removed the top panel around the ignition, but I couldn't see a single supply wire! All the wires looked like signal wires, very small gauge.

Does anyone have instructions on removing panelling so I can gain access to any kind of supply wire? It looks like I will have to remove the navi in order to get anything.

I don't need any electrical advice - I have the necessary knowledge and tools. I just need to know how to remove various panels without damaging the interior.

Thanks!

I managed to do it tonight! I'll post a how-to tomorrow with pics. BTW, I installed a radar detector and managed to hide all the wires, so it looks great.

Damn, I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier. Not sure how I missed it.

Where were you initially looking, and where did you end up taking ACC power from?

I found an unused harness in the glove box that was off to the far right, close to the firewall. One of the pins was 12V on ACC, so I used that.

I did the same thing, installed a radar detector. In order to get it up, I used the Bluetooth Mic harness (unused, obviously) to bring that ACC up to the maplight, then installed the radar detector there. I initially had it in the center of the window, but I managed to sneak it above the mirror in order to conceal it. The forward detector just clears the black frits on the front window, and there is a clear view out the back window for the rear sensor. (The pictures make it look like it's easy to see from the outside. It's not, but the flash makes it obvious)

Again, sorry I didn't see this earlier, I likely could have helped! Though, with your MR, you may have Bluetooth, so that route is out.

Still want to see how you did it though.

you should have saved yourself a headache by buying the add-a-fuse

http://www.amazon.com/Bussmann-BP-HH...5828745&sr=8-1

my cousin helped me install my radar to the left of the rearview when i was installing my HID fogs and doing an oil change. He didnt even need to take off the pillar, just tucked the wires under the pillar with the weather stripping pulled off, only took him 20 mins, only wire you can see if the one going to the radar

its pretty simple, you just remove one of the fuses that is being used in the fuse box, i used the windshield wiper one, put the add a fuse into that slot where the old fuse was, the slot with the wire running out from it is where you want to place the fuse for your accesory, then the fuse you pulled out from the fusebox goes into the remaining slot of the add-a-fuse unit.

I also hardwired the radar det using "add a fuse" method.

I use the passenger compartment fuse(#4) for Wiper to tap into. It is switched. Also grounded the connection to a metal screw nearby.

Initially I used #19 Acc socket but it was "constant on"...not good

I wouldn't use the "Add a fuse" unless you know that the wire supplying the fuse you're removing, is large enough to handle the added load of the circuit you're adding to it.

As for adding a switched power supply to your car, you could always use a relay, and use power from an unused circuit at a fuse box, or tap into a larger wire feeding various circuits (again, assuming the load you're adding isn't too much) and use a switched circuit to trip the relay.

that is correct, but a radar det has such a low volt draw. It should not be an issue.....

If it was any other acc I would be cautious....
