Installed HKS Catback system, but have a question?

Hey everyone,

I just finished installing an HKS Legamax Exhaust and Mid-pipe and it was straight forward easy install. I opted to not pick up the diffuser protector pieces (I did not like the way the look and really dont want to draw more attention to the exhaust since cali cops will right tickets all day for modified exhausts ).

Without those diffuser covers will the HKS tips melt my diffuser?

Does anyone have any experience driving with this exhaust on long trips/at the track/ ETC.. with any feedback on this?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I did not know where else to ask it

Thanks and any help is much appreciated

I dont know about the exhaust actually melting the plastic, but I have seen it before on other cars where the tips are larger than stock and are right near the plastic (bouncing even from the road).

You dont need to get the specific HKS covers since they are shiney.... get some carbon fiber ones and it would be difficult for the cops to spot a change.

I have considered the Rex speed ones, but I am trying to leave the exterior looking as stock as possible. Mostly wondering if I can get away with not using anything to protect it? Thanks for the advice Spy

I got the rexpeed carbon protectors. They are very hard to see if you use the screw that comes with it. Unless you use silver rivots, it's pretty stealthy. But unless your exhaust is fully black, CA cops will still pick you off pretty fast, especially that huge shiny thing hanging in the middle.

Also, you can go with the carbon fiber diffuser that Siebon makes.

One good thing though is that our diffuser is black, so it won't melt as bad if it was a colored part.

I have had the exact setup installed for over a month and I have had 0 issues without any protective exhaust shields. I have driven over 1.5 hours straight on several occations. You will be fine. The HKS exhaust fits really well.

Yes, I agree it fits really well. This question came as an afterthought and I was hoping for feedback like what you provided Thanks Stellar!

If i was going to choose one or the other the rexspeeds would def be the choice, but I am trying to refrain from adding any Cf pieces to the X. Just kind of over the Cf look...

I have read many posts about California cops giving out tickets...on what grounds can they write tickets for aftermarket parts if you can meet emissions?

They can either write you a fix it ticket which most CHP stations will just sign off if the exhaust is not too loud (over 95db).

Lately all the cops are writing ref tickets which means the owner has to take the car to the state ref where they go through your car with a fine tooth comb and if they find a mod or mickey mouse wiring or anything not stock or just like stock then you fail (even if you pass the emissions test.)

Get more than 3 ref tickets and dont pass visual and the car can only be registered as a track car or non operational and will not be aloud on public roads again

CARB and the laws in Cali make me want to move, but the weather keeps me here

Hate cops giving lame tickets especially exhaust. Crotch rockets and Harleys are so much louder.

You'll be fine. No shields are needed.

Did you consider a spray on application? I would purchase them and paint them with a black HIGH TEMP paint(engine paint, all colors available). I opted for a larger rivet, instead of screws, lower profile and painted all black, you cannot tell up close. There has got to be something out there that would work..... ??
