Changing oil on rear diff
I thought you should just fill until fliuid starts coming out of the fill hole? To me, that is the most accurate way of knowing you have the fluid to the correct level, as long as the car is sitting level. I'd be worried about overfilling.

my point was that i only used .3qts when it started flowing out, but service manual obviously said use .55qts, so i had a good bit to go.
Hmm that's weird. If it starts to spill out, doesn't that mean it's full? How can you get more in without it spilling out everything else you added? Just seems odd - I didn't measure how much I added - I just kept adding until it start to gush out, since the fill bolt is supposed to be the "level" indicator. I even let it sit for a half hour to let it slowly drip out and reach a steady level.

I hope mine is ok - here's my logic...it kept slowly dripping out for several minutes. It wouldn't do that unless I already had mine full right? How else would it keep dripping out like that?

when it's full, it won't just slowly drip out, it'll quite literally pour out, like a steady flow. not drips. i mistook the drips as full when i did the transfer case initially, but i wasn't even half way through the quart, so i just kept pumping until it starts to steadily flow out after .9 qts.
well you know how the oil is thick, and the rear diff's casing is quite small, so if you put too much pressure on the pump, the oil will just splatter out from hitting parts and things inside the case.

Gotcha...yeah I pumped fluid in until it was a river pouring out, which then later died down to small drips. So to clarify, when you had only put in 0.3 quarts and it started dripping out, it was just small drips, not like a flood of fluid as if it were full right? Thanks for giving me some peace of mind here.
