Tinting Laws?

Is there a website or resource somewhere that has good details on tinting laws for each state? I'm in IL and will need to find out what I'm allowed to do for the windows, headlights, and taillights.

TIA

When someone posts a question like this on an expert site they are looking for peoples experienced opinions. IE: "stay away from site XXX because the data is out of date", or "I like XXXX because they also have people posting experiences with tickets" But thanks for the d-ck response Jordan, you are a real friendly character. I've seen you post many rude things to people like a kid with no social grace, but hey, it's the internet right, why not behave like a snotty 13 year old...

628: thanks for the links, In this case I'm only seeing window tint laws and still looking for headlight and taillight. So far I'm finding "as long as the brake lights shine through you are fine" but still trying to find something definitive and info on headlights.

cheers

Ah, I missed the part about headlights and taillights. To my knowledge, they aren't legal at all, but please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

But most likely they are illegal because in terms of pros vs cons, I don't think there are any pros to it other than looks.

Now window tinting on the other hand, has pros as it can help protect against those oh-so-deadly-cancer-causing rays of light from the sun, and keeps the inside of your car cool. But that's beside the point.

i am fairly sure that in NJ you can get the tails tinted as long as the tint does not change the color of the brake light and is still clearly visible when on. as for headlights it is illegal to minimize the output of the bulb so in other words if the tint makes the lights less bright it is illegal. finally, for the windows, tinting the fronts with any film is illegal unless you have a medical condition requiring them to be tinted. the back windows are all good. you can tint them till you can't see out and you will not be bothered for it. as for chicago i can't really help, but NJ is pretty strict so the same may be alright if not more.

it should be on the dmv website of your state/county. It really depends on the cop on how strict they wanna be. Some dont care, some enforce the law to the max.

I have zero tolerance for stupidity. A law is a law, not an opinion. You want expert opinions on tint rules? 10 seconds on google would have given you an answer. Obviously you know how to use it as you managed to find this site without even owning an Evo. Glad to hear you have noticed my other work

Actually it's pretty difficult to find any specific laws regarding tinting headlights/taillights, so you may want to actually try doing the search yourself before bashing on another user.

And you most definitely won't find it in under 10 seconds.

And in all honesty, I was going to bash him if his post was regarding JUST window tints, as laws regarding window tints require no skill to find.

The lower % = darker tint.
I'm from chicago too and ive been wanting to tint my car, but illinois doesnt allow tint on the front windows. i just didnt want to give the cops one more reason to pull me ovr. As for the taillights and headlights, one guy told me they have to b the removable types. ie covers.

Stop at the police station or ask a friend if you have one who is a officer. Thats the best, most accurate way.

Here in PA, all sunscreening(tinting) is illegal. If you had 35% though, chances are your not going to get pulled over.

I had 5% all around and it took me around a year and a half to get pulled over. Took of the front 2, but still got 5% on the rest.

Thanks for the follow up replies guys. Okay, I finally found the actual Illinois Vehicle Code Laws thanks to a poster on another forum. The gov doesn't make this stuff easy to find that's for sure. The relevant info on headlights and taillights is in the Lights and Lamps section. What is interesting is that there is nothing in there prohibiting tinting. Only a definition for visibility.

----------------------------------------------
(b) All other motor vehicles shall exhibit at least 2 lighted head lamps, with at least one on each side of the front of the vehicle, which satisfy United States Department of Transportation requirements, showing white lights, including that emitted by high intensity discharge (HID) lamps, or lights of a yellow or amber tint, during the period from sunset to sunrise, at times when rain, snow, fog, or other atmospheric conditions require the use of windshield wipers, and at any other times when, due to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions, persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly discernible at a distance of 1000 feet. Parking lamps may be used in addition to but not in lieu of such head lamps. Every motor vehicle, trailer, or semi‑trailer shall also exhibit at least 2 lighted lamps, commonly known as tail lamps, which shall be mounted on the left rear and right rear of the vehicle so as to throw a red light visible for at least 500 feet in the reverse direction, except that a truck tractor or road tractor manufactured before January 1, 1968 and all motorcycles need be equipped with only one such tail lamp.
----------------------------------------------

So there you have it, 1000 feet in the front 500 in the rear. Of course, none of this stops cops from pulling you over and hassling you about tints or even writing a ticket that you need to fight in court. That's a different story.

--Jordan "A law is a law, not an opinion."
Oh really? That's funny because I thought there were thousands of court cases everyday with people debating the interpretation of the law. You sound like a jackass trying to be a know it all. Stay out of my threads. This Article should help you with your imaginary superiority complex.

Think they vary from state to state. Check your local government website.
