Lower inner section plate removal?

I want to remove the lower inner section plates on my X. they block the view of the intercooler along with its pipes so i was wondering if there is any way to remove them without removing the entire front bumper. thanks. here is a picture of what im talking about..

There are screws which hold those plates into place. So you will need to remove the entire bumper. However, those plates direct air to other places such as your oil cooler and brakes, so think twice before removing them.

Yeah you definitely need to remove the bumper. You might catch a lot of slack around here if you remove them since they are "functional," but I think it looks better without them so mine are gone. I need to show off the sexy AMS cast end tanks.

I like it better without the guides also. I will probably take them out when I shave the front emblem.

Those parts that you've highlighted in your pic should only be directing air into the intercooler core. Removing those shouldn't impact brake cooling or your oil intercooler (SST only?).

You might loose some small % of cooling efficiency by doing so, but as long as you understand that, go for it.

I agree 100%. Just got done looking at my gsr and it's definitely only to guide air through the core fins. It's as good as gone.

True.

Here's some info on it for those considering removing their shroud:

Extensive development work on engine cooling was carried out in order to obtain the maximum performance from the LANCER EVOLUTION X. As an example of enhanced cooling performance, the structure for guiding air to the twin clutch SST oil cooler and the engine oil cooler is described below. Fig. 12 shows the front view of the vehicle. In order to efficiently cool the oil, the air taken from the center opening is guided via an air duct to the oil coolers. (Fig. 13)

Fig. 14 shows the CFD results of the flow for cooling. It can be seen that the cooling air enters the duct from the center opening and passes through it then flows into the oil coolers. Fig. 15 shows measurements of actual air flow velocity; the air flow velocity has increased by 50%.

I'm removing the center section out of the bumper cover, cutting the emblem off with an air saw, filling any holes or low spots with a resin mix, sanding, and painting with trim black paint.

StokEd, that's some interesting info. I guess the guys with large intercoolers are really screwed. On second thought, they should be fine.

Holy sh*t.... stokEd dropping the knowledge down on us like a ton of bricks lol!

Nice, i stand corrected. Looks like there is a functional component to that center shroud section and the oil intercooler.

thats awesome

Which intercoolers require you to remove it? Most of the aftermarket intercoolers I've seen clear the shroud without any trouble, although most I've seen are ~4" thick or less.
