It's significantly thinner, but only on the outward portion, not the inward.

The OEM front plate bracket is held on by the bumper cover, at least on my 2008, that uses the expanding rubber screw mount things.

 

I want one just so I can add the bling bling tow hook

It's only lighter because it's thinner than the more stringent US safety specification.
