Unsightly cracks in Carbon Fiber? Easy temporary fix!
Unsightly cracks in Carbon Fiber? Easy temporary fix!
DISCLAIMER:
It has been pointed out to me that the oil used in this fix could possibly degrade the resin and carbon fibers over time. Please use at your own risk.
So this weekend, I picked up a carbon fiber radiator plate for my car for dirt cheap. The part was brand new but had been sitting in storage for about a year and took some damage from moving it around. After the deal was one and I went home, I got a real in-depth look at the part and immediately noticed its flaws.

I was sad to find it had quite a few cracks in the resin. About 3 minor cracks and 2 larger ones. The cracks went all the way down to the carbon fiber and made the fiber look white colored. I read online about filling in the cracks with fresh resin and resanding and clear coating.. but that was way too expensive and way too time consuming for how much I paid for the part.
Then I came up with a really ghetto temporary solution! I took my bottle of 3-in-1 Oil (you can find it at WalMart or Home Depot for $2 or $3) and just put a drop on the crack and spread the oil along the crack. Gave it 10 seconds or so to soak into the crack and VOILA. The cracks are now barely noticeable! It even turned the damaged "white" carbon fibers back to their original color!

I'm going to let this sit for a few days to weeks and I will update this page on how the 3-in-1 oil holds up. It is lubricating oil so it shouldn't evaporate anytime soon. Also I added a coat of paint sealant wax on top to try to keep the oil in.
And I do apologize for the change of lighting in the pictures, but you're just going to have to trust me on this. The part was hard to look at when it first had bright white cracks but now I barely notice them unless I look directly at the spots. Of course as the owner of the part, I'm always going to know the imperfections are there.
Hope this is helpful for you guys! It sure made my day when it actually turned out the way I had hoped!
