Shipping question

Is it better to have the vendor mount and balance the wheels and tires, then ship them, or receive them separately and then have a local shop do it?

its totally up to you, i had them shipped seperately and had a local shop mount and balance my wheels, but if you have the vendor do it for you, you can just slap them on right away. i guess i would say have the vendor mount and balance for you, then ship it, it would be easier

My only concern is damage that could occur while shipping.

It's actually better to ship a wheel and tire together - the tire protects the wheel from damage! I would have the vendor mount/balance before shipping. It will also probably end up being cheaper overall.

I've bought a couple sets of wheels/tires for my previous vehicle, and always had the tires mounted prior to shipping. A lot of times the vendor will mount them for free, so you can save some money. I never had a problem with them getting damaged in shipping, but that will depend on how well a vendor packages things.

I just recently bought a set of wheels and tires for my Evo. I ended up having them mounted when they got here only because I wanted to swap over the TPMS sensors from the stock wheels. You might want to consider whether or not you are going to use the stock TPMS sensors before you decide to have the tires mounted.

True true the tires would protect the wheels.

I'm probably not going to run the TPMS on these right now since I'm taking them off in November when it gets cold and putting the stockers back on. What exactly do the sensors do?

I think they tell you if you have low pressure on your tires. The cluster will tell you when your tires need air. So I'm guessing not installing them would be an annoyance.

depending on who you get your wheels and tires from they can install the tpms on them for you.

If you have a good working relationship with your dealership, especially the evo technician, get the TPMS sensors. That way, the next time you go in for an oil change, they'll see that the light is on, and they will likely fix it free of charge for you. That's what happened to me. Usually they charge around 100 bucks to reprogram a new set if you ask for it to be done.

I would prefer it come in ready to mount instead of finding a shop to do it. Less time wasted.

I use to work at ups. I would ship them with the tires. People in shipping don't care about your wheels. just getting their stuff leaded and unloaded.

Ok guys, they're coming next week mounted and balanced.

I also requested that they be held at my local Fedex since no one is ever home and it just becomes a game of catch up. Also, my SWIFT springs that came on Monday were dropped off AT THE WRONG HOUSE and someone signed off on it with my last name. Luckily I went to UPS to see where they were since they were supposed to come between 10-2 and the lady showed me that they had been signed off for at 1:18. She called the driver and he rushed over to that house and brought them to my house.

I understand mistakes, but WTF with that person signing off on them with my last name? I need to go to that persons house and ask them because I just don't understand.

I would have them shipped seperately, only because when whoever the Vendor has mount them scratches the **** out of them, no one wants to take responsibilty. You aren't there to see what went on. I was left waiting for either my money back or rims in brand new condition for over six months. Vendor couldn't deliver either in a proficient fashion. They made the shipping company (FedEx) pay for the rims TWICE, and I know it wasn't FedEx's fault. There's no way it could have been. It was obvious the damage was caused by careless mounting process.

Trust me, it's better to get the rims in perfect condition, take high res pics and then take them to have them mounted and have whoever mounts them 100% responsible.
