I have a quick question....I just bought a new set of rims and tires. I took the stockers off my X GSR and I had a question about the TPMS sensors in the tire....

I am buying a new set of them to go in the new tires, do they have to be programmed to the car before they are put in the tire? Or can I put them in and drive up to the dealership and have them program them after they are already installed?

Yes, they must be programmed to the vehicle. Whoever mounts the tires to the wheels should be able to install the sensors before hand and program the sensors to your car. If they can't, drive it to the dealership.

 

are you saying that if the sensors are installed before they are programmed, they can be programmed later at the delaership??

 

Doesn't driving around with the new sensors for a few miles reprogram them to the ecu?

or do you have to take it to the dealer every time you get new wheels or sensors put on?

 

When you get new tires the OLD TPMS are installed, they will re-callibrate after a few miles.

When you get NEW TPMS sensors, they must be reprogrammed, the dealer will charge you a fair amount to do so.

 

The worst part is I was doing this at a Ford dealership and it takes all but 10 minutes at the most to reporgram TPMS, I dont know Mitsu's setup but with ford and Kia they do it like this:

Kia was a bit more advanced it had a actual Diagnostic Remote thing with optios and an LCD screen fancy fancy.

For just a button on the remote "magnetic i belive" and you had to step on the gas peddle 3 times and then turn the ignition to on position and wait for a honk....

And they will charge you a butt load to do this....what a joke.

 

thanks for all the replies but I would like a straight answer.....THEY NEW SENSORS CAN BE PROGRAMMED AFTER THEY ARE INSTALLED RIGHT??? I don't have to take them the sensors and have them programmed before I put them in the tire, correct??

Almost all vehicles have a different relearn process. I find the Infiniti/Nissan and Lexus have the hardest. You have find the sensor ID's, hook up an OBD2 scanner, plug in all the sensor ID's, and pray it works.

Haven't done it yet on my car yet..I hope it's easy.

The sensors do not have to be programmed prior to installing them in the wheels.
