Brake Squeal

So I've been getting squeals from my brakes for almost 3 weeks now. I have about 15k on the Evo and I'm wondering what it could be. I don't brake hard and almost always downshift (pissed off a few drivers behind me doing this haha!). I did clean my wheels last weekend and tried to clean the brake area too but still have a squeal. Oh and it also only does it going less than 10 mph.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

weather has shifted for me. In the winter not much sound but now that the weather has warmed up quickly, that squeaking is back. lol

Very common and normal. Nothing to worry about.

I have the same problem and the pads and rotors look fine. I tend to ignore the problem due to idea that they are Brembos and that brake setups with a bit of a racing-like flavor tend to have increased squeal noise.

I have the same problem and it is p!ssing me off, it makes me feel like im driving a hoopty. People look at me and the have that WTF look when they hear it cause it is phucking loud. I think I am just going to change the pads out to RacingBrake pads. I hear they dont make much noise or none at all.

Guys. Stop calling it a "problem." It is NOT a problem. Squeaky brakes are common on cars with aggressive performance pads...like the Evo X. It's the same thing on the VIII and IX.

If the squeaky pads bother you, you can always change your pads to a less aggressive pad that will not squeak, but will decrease the braking performance.

Badge of Honor. It's the major reason (the other reason is tires) why the Evo stopping distance is so much shorter than a Lancer. Be a proud squealer.

not sure this will work with you but when I had my STI I ran Track pads at the racetrack. But instead of changing them in at the track I'd change them before I drove down so I could bed them in. They would squeal for a few times but then afterwards it would quiet down. at the racetrack they were always quiet since I was doing lots of heavy braking. But once I got back from the track I was lazy and left them in for a week. They started to squeal after a week or so from "normal" driving and braking. I think it was because under heavy braking, the pad material transfers to the rotors and helps keep the noise down. under normal braking you're just scraping away material from the rotor.

Since you say you dont brake hard I think you're just scraping your rotors and that's what's causing noise. I'd suggest that you go bed your brakes in a safe area(NOTE: Not a busy highway or street) and see if that helps.

Oh and just some food for thought: brakes are easier to replace than a clutch. I usually save downshifting for the racetrack when i'm catching up to S4s and porsches.

I would take squeaky brake noise any day of the lifetime of the car vs sacrificing braking performance.

I'm having this "problem" too! ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY. I took it to the dealer cuz i was getting a pulsation in the brake pedal and the loud *** squealing. They charged me the going rate for a front rotor and pad resurfacing. They stopped squealing for about 2 days and i took it back complaining that it was worse than before so they resurfaced the pads again and its better now but still annoying and the only thing the dealership will do for me is install new pads for free. Guess im dealin with the squeal or getting Hawks.

Please try a proper bed-in on your brakes. You get the pads hot, transfer pad material to the rotor, and then the pad rides on a layer of pad material rather than the iron of the rotor. I did an article & video on the procedure a while back. Check it out:
