Best winter setup?
I like my Icebears well enough. I don't know how much brand matters, though...snow tires on an AWD is full of win. The only real limit is your ground clearance.
I had thought about (and these aren't an all winter tire) the conti DWS'. However, the tire rack went up from 135 to now 153 per tire on them, which i'm pretty disappointed about.
By the way... I ask about these tires because we don't (aside from last year) get much snow over the previous years... so I could have a tire that would get me around in the snow, but not have to use a winter tire the whole season since I hear they tear up pretty fast with a lot of dry driving.

I didn't think you would need to have winter tires in Victoria.
But I had the Blizzak LM60s on my EVO and they were pretty solid, just put them on today actually cuz winters a comin around the corner

does anyone have a cheaper alternative to the DWS for the once in a while deep snow, but mostly just cold temps in my area? Or are the DWS' gonna be pretty much the best bang for the buck? If so... is there a cheaper place than the tire racks 153.00 each?

Evo plus snow equals heaven. What the car was made for all season driving why i bought one. Also i use stockers evo 8 rims on my evo 8 with dunlop ds2s i think where the model a more aggressive tire than the 3ds but dry handling isnt bad unless you push them real hard than they understeer like crazy. Just a tip if that happens floor it to get your backend to come around.
I run the Hankook Icebears w300s here in Cleveland. They are excellent snow tires for the money. Highly recommend them. Plus if you don't get super snow days except maybe 7 whole winter than having a sportier snow tire is great.
The 'Rack drives me crazy with their fluid pricing changes. I am happy with my Avid W4S's ASR for the type of need you're describing. STL has some snow, but mostly it's cold, occassional rare ice, and LOTS of rain or cold dry weather. The ASR's don't wear badly, I ran them all summer due to budget for summer extreme perf tires this year, and they hold up very nicely in terms of mileage. Of course performance isn't "extreme", but I found that even for spring HPDE's, inflating my ASR's to 49psi gave me a lot more handling abilities than I expected to have. Not a track tire, but nice compromise for the winter/cheaper than summer requirements you probably have.
I found a set of 225/45/17 for my IX and mounted them on my stock BBS. I found them used down in WA and met the guy in Bellingham. Bought a set of Blizzak WS50 (made in 05 so not the softest) for $200. Lots of tread on them, haven't had an issue so far during our latest snowfall. It amazed me at how much grip and confidence they give you. The LM series is more performance oriented compared to the WS, but I would recommend any of them. Most snow tires paired with AWD should be fine for our winters. We don't get THAT much snow compared to the rest of Canada so yeah. Most winter tires should be fine for us.
Just got a set of 235x40x18 WS60 Blizzaks yesterday and can't wait for the snow. The drive does feel a little mushy but it the snow this will equal grip.
Supposed to snow a couple inches over night tonight so tomorrow morning will go driving to see how they grip. Will post my thoughts.
