Brake pads don't wear by the mile. How long they'll last completely depends on your braking patterns. You can tell whether or not you need to replace them just by looking at them and seeing how much material is left.

If you take the wheel off you can peek down in there with a flashlight and see how much pad material is remaining and how close you are to the wear indicator. Be sure to check both the inner and outer pads since they don't always wear evening, and be sure to also check the front and rear since again, they don't always wear evenly. As stated above, wear really depends on driving conditions and driving style. Some guys kill pads in 10k miles and others are able to nurse them along for 40k+.

(I corrected your thread title to the proper to/too usage)

I've got 28k miles on my stock pads but will need to change them pretty soon. I mostly drive in stop and go traffic to/from work and then some spirited driving on the weekends. I just hate how bad the brake dust is from the stockers.

Who needs to brake when you've got cornering speeds like the Evo?

I think I got around 30,000 miles out of my stock pads in my 2008. They actually still had some meat on them, but I had to change them while I could. My brake light starting coming on too, due to the fluid level dropping. If your brake light comes on then that's usually a good indicator that you need to consider new pads.

When you check them, grab a ruler and see how many millimeters of pad you have left. 10 being new (correct me if I am wrong) and 1 being terrible. To be safe I would replace them at 3mm. Depending on driving situations and what not can change the number but I wouldnt go below a 2 mm.
