Winter Tires

I'm going to be putting some winter tires on my stock rims (my Advans should be here for summer tires soon ).

Should I order 235/45, 235/40 or 245/40 for my winters? I'm inclined to go with the 235/45 for winters and more like a 255/40 for summers.

Also, I know I've never heard a bad thing about Blizzaks, but the Michelin Pilot Alpin are actually the highest rated on a couple of different sites, anyone have any experience with those? Price is +/- $10 between the two.

Finally, I have a few offers of used winter tires here from my WTB thread, but nothing that was wowing me compared to new, so I may end up getting new instead. Is low mileage tires for $50-100 less than new really worth it?

Do you get a lot of snow in WV?

That link confirms my 235/45 assumption, thanks!

I wouldn't say we get a lot, but a few feet each year. Usually one or two snowfalls exceeding 1 foot.

I've driven the last 11 years in a 2000 Saturn SC1 all winter. It plows snow when needed, but I tore my body kit doing so last year

Ha, I'd rock the SC1 on winter tires. Salt + nice parts and underbody = PITA.

Our state road is too cheap for salt here in WV. We use "cinders" for traction and let the melting occur on its own schedule.

The SC1 still runs fine and it remains an option, I just didn't want to rely on it much longer at over 150k miles even if it's probably good for it. The body kit has seen better days in its 8+ years and if I was going to drive the Saturn every day I'd want to clean it up again. I still prefer the Sparco seats in the Saturn though

17s on a stock Evo X? Yeah, that's going to happen.

edit: outrageous overstatement, for which I apologize; see below

Interesting. But I'll bet they're wider than 7.5.

Yep. There are a few (two?) 17s that fit. But, as I said, they are wider that 7.5" because they need the space between where the spoke connects to the barrel and where the barrel clears the rotor.

You don't necessarily need width, just offset...

You can take 7 or 7.5 but the inside of the rims must fit to the brakes.
A buddy is driving in winter 7.5x 17 with pirelli sottozero W210 215/50 r17
