Note that the above - which I don't disagree with - is less true than it used to be. It was definitely true that the WS-50 was loud and unpleasant on dry pavement, because of the tread design. The WS-60, however, isn't as bad, because they added a circum center ridge. But, as suggested above, it's still pretty bad (or awful) on dry pavement compared to a good all-season. Even more annoying to some of us, the WS-60 isn't nearly as good on dirt as the WS-50 was.

So after reading all the posts I have decided to go for the Nokian.

Completely agree. My next set will be LM once my WS wears down.

I put Dunlop 3D 235/45/17 on a second set of stock rims (take offs) for my wife's A4. Very nice winter performance tire for these central Michigan winters. Ran older WS-50 Blizzaks on my car this winter, and worked well, but are softer, and don't expect them to last nearly as long.

Nokian are serious snows. If I was up in Canada again, I'd rock the most aggressive snow I could (actually do that here in OH too...did that and of course we had no snow...).

Yeah I don't think you'll be disappointed. I got the Blizzak LM-60's and they have been great. In Chicago it didnt snow much at all so the tires saw mostly dry pavement which is what I expected because even when it does snow a lot, the roads are usually clear within a day in the city. But they were great during the 3 or so small storms that we did have. I DD'd my car all winter and they still have PLENTY of tread left. Great grip and no noticeable tire noise so I'm pretty happy so far.

This tire is geared more towards dry performance than an all out snow tire, but that works for me as even here in ottawa the roads are plowed and bare 90% of the time.
Second winter now and lots of tread left.
I went with these tires as well in the stock size, they are fairly affordable, good winter tires (not the absolute best, but with AWD I have had no issues in our MN winters) and have very good tread wear for a winter tire. I have been running mine for 4 years now and have about 12k miles on them and they look like new.

I used conti extreme DWS (Dry/Wet/Snow) on my car in the winter here in KY. Decent in snow and ice, good when the winter was gone too. Very reasonably priced and highly rated. I put 245/40-18's on my stock wheels. Good all season to not wear down your summer tires as well. Wait for the right time, and tire rack has some sort of sale or offer usually as well.
