Obnoxious Suspension Clunk..need input

So I have Eibach springs installed for about a couple months now and the passenger side front is making a clunk sound at super slow speeds. It does this when the car is barely moving over unsettled pavement and it is driving me nuts! It sounded like it was the strut making noise, but I have had my shop take it out over 4 times and no one can figure it out. The noise is coming directly from the top of the suspension...... As mentioned, it only does it over unsettled pavement while rolling very slow.........shop has everything tightend and checked out multiple times......do I just live with it?

Does it do it when you're on the brakes as you hit the bump?

Check strut for leaking oil.

Does the X have a cartridge bolt on the strut housing? Check under strut for one and see if its loose.

Hey guys, thanks for the quick reply..............
Braking does not effect it at all......I can be slowly rolling and it is the initial movement that casues the a clunk.....

The shop took this apart the last timer and the strut is not leaking nor shot, they said that they did give the cartridge a turn as it was not all of the way tightened... Thought that had done the trick now a week later the noise is back........... I really do not want to keep taking it back to the shop....... AT this point we have no clue what it is..... When the car is sitting with the hood open you can put your body weight over the strut tower and push down to hear the noise...... We know that it is coming exactly from the top but cannot find exactly what it is...... Could it be the stock top hat itself making the noise?

Tightening worked -- now its back? Might have loosened up. Thread loc is your friend

Did you line up the mount holes for lower perch and top mount?

has the same type of noise, it was the strut itself, you need to check the strut for free play. i would hoist up the car and push with both arms on the upper part of the tire, push hard and see if the strut moves. you will see the movement between the strut body and piston, if you have the same noise as my car.

Hey it sounds like the same coil over knock sound that everyone experiences (although you only have springs). The sound is usually from the spring trying to turn or rotate on the spring perch, which can happen while going slow over tiny bumps or just turning the wheel. Check out my vid of what I used to stop it on my coils, the sound has yet to resurface after 5/6 months.

Hey Guys, thanks for the imput............I had the car in for the 4th time and it was the strut itself. The cartridge was a qurter turn loose...........So, they tightened it back up and all was good.........until a week later when it came back. So, should I have it re-tightened again or just buy a new strut?? Checked on-line and a replacement strut is $321 from Fred Bean parts!!! That is waay too much for a stock strut, but at this point I just leave the radio up so that I dont hear it. Halfway considering ordering a new strut with a new top hat.......................Anyone have any other ideas?? Any cons of just leaving it as-is????

Thanks,
AA

Just wanted to give an update............after talking with over EVO X owners who had this problem, it seems to be the top mount of the strut going bad. I guess the bearing craps out and that why this noise is coming from the top of the suspension. Went to mitsubishiparts.net and ordered a new top had and perch............as soon as I get them I will swap out and report back.

Thanks,
AA

Cliff notes for anybody who doesn't want to read through a bunch of garbage posts. New Top Strut nut, or tighten....
