I assume that you see the pads as being parts of the calipers, then. Because the noise doesn't come from the pistons and those are the only parts of the actual caliper that move on our brakes.

I should rephrase. Any metal to metal contact on or around the caliper unit. E.g rear of pad to piston contact. Locking pins and pad retainers etc. The purpose of those metal shims is to reduce the brake noise by limiting those vibrations which is where most of the squeling occours. Also the lube does this same purpose.

There is also a product that enables you to put a synthetic shim on the back of the pad. Can't remember the name, but I think its made by crc.

OEM pads squeal like they are being murdered in the winter temps. I couldn't stand it anymore and got the Hawk Ceramic pads. Not a single noise since install and it still stops on a dime with minimal brake dust =)

I use to work at the Acura dealership and we use to put business cards in between the pads and the shims, then add the grease. It will give the grease a little longer life. Plus it's not permanent, they will wear out or you can just replace. I've did it numerous times on the Acura tl type s with the brembo brakes. Hopes this helps.

I had expected some squeal with the car due to the complaints and adjusting to it on my last BMW however, I haven't heard the brakes make any noise at all since new. Not. even. once. I have about 900 miles now. I'm still expecting some noise in the future. Here in WA we've had temps down to 30 and up to high 80's since I got it too

Yeah with all the temp change, I would expect some condisation in the brake pads.
