New rotors?

Hi everyone,

First of all I would like to apologize as I am sure this question has come up a million times before. I have done a search and found various answers but none really reflect directly to what I am facing.

My car is a 2009 model with 27,500 miles on the clock. I will be the first to admit that I wore the front pads down too far (whirring noise under hard breaking) before arranging to have them replaced.

I took the car for service last week and they informed me that all the rotors need 'skimming' I believe this is more commonly referred to as 'turning'. Now, by no means am I an expert but I have investigated the rotors. I could best describe the face of the rotors as having a slight ripple, no deep grooves or scratches, however, there is a protruding lip around the edge. My estimate would be that this protrudes by about 1mm.

I then called the dealer and without even seeing the car, I was informed that I need to replace the front rotors at $580 just for the front rotors (without labor) although, the paper work I received back when I had the service done, is clearly written that the rotors need 'skimming'.

Basically, if we ignore the dealership info and based on the description I have provided regarding the rotors, would you say that the rotors need replaced?

Thanks in advance to all who respond.

Best regards,

Craig

[edit] The new brake pads I will be putting on the car are Cosworth - Streetmaster pads

Going to go ahead and have the rotors skimmed, if they warp, I will obviously just replace them. Seems like the best way to go about it.

If anyone would like to throw out some suggestions on good spirited daily driving rotors at around the $1500 mark (for all 4 corners) that would be appreciated, if not

I have girodisc 2 piece rotors at all four corners. They work great. I would buy them again.

My guess: the tech gave the correct answer ... that they just needed surfacing ... but then the service manager got involved. Managers never say to turn rotors. They always try to sell you new ones, instead.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for all the replies, much appreciated!

Just an update, I dropped the car to the dealership this morning to get the front rotors tuned and new pads installed. They charged me $65 all in all, so can't complain.

I figured I would have the rotors turned as if the other option was to buy new rotors anyway, I may as well have them turned and if they warp look at new rotors then. It seems girodisk is the way to go in regards to replacing the rotors if/when needed.

On a side note, the dealer informed me about the recall on the CMC and Im also getting the replaced while the car is with them.

Overall, not too bad!

Thanks again guys

They charged BD25 so about $65, all in all not too bad!

Thank you for the link, a lot of interesting information. I should be picking the car up today and will be sure to follow the supplier guidelines to bed the pads properly.

Thanks again everyone.
