Winter wheels !

Hi everyone,

Has anyone driven with 8x18 wheels with 225x40-45x18 snow tires ?
What do you think ?
If not, does anyone have any thoughts if it's a good or bad idea ?

I'm thinking about doing that this year.

I've been looking for quite a while at 18x8 rims and I've been advised not to go down from 8.5 to 8 it's not the best idea... Plus you have to choose your rims well with the correct offset and make sure that the spokes don't hit your front calipers from the side if you see what I mean.
I'm going to go with the standard size of 18x8.5 ET 35 or 38 with 225-223/45/18

Who advised you not to?

I'm going to try to fit them on Monday or Tuesday. I'll bring spacers just in case.

We have a great selection of wheels for winter use on our site. You can view them in the Upgrade Garage.

It is a good idea. The narrower tire size will put the car's weight on a smaller contact patch (more weight per surface area)....this is a good thing when you're wanting the car to dig through snow and find traction.

Previously I drove a Genesis Coupe, which stock comes with 245-width rear tires. I put 215-width snow tires on (with appropriately sized wheels) and I felt invincible in snow in that car. I could pull away with stoplights (etc.) with no problem, no sand bags in the trunk, etc.

Though YMMV, I say go for it if you can snag a great deal on the wheels (I'd troll craigslist for wheels, save the money for good snow tires).

Try an Evo X on 215/65/15s for true invincibility.

It's was a car parts dealer that wasen't too sure about putting narrower wheels on an evo 10 because of weight, speed, handling and geometry. He must have his reasons as an after market dealer.
Personally, I think 18x8 should be fine allthough must be carefull for the offset. I can't find 18x8 wheels with the correct measurments that I need unless I buy them internationally, which will cost too much and I won't get the approval documents that I need.
I'm interested how yours fitted ? Did you use spacers ? How is the handling and all ? Any pictures ?

Thanks ! Your store is really great, but it will cost way too much to ship wheels were I live..

Depends

For my opinion it depends on what you are doing with your car in winter.
Are you going to ski with 80% of the travel on dry and 20% on snow?
Have you snow all winter where u live?
How are the roads? What depth of snow on the road? Ice under the snow?
Ice track days?...

Ice track days? That sounds exciting...

I have definitely thought about getting some rims for the snow tires specifically. I've been running the stock size with no problem (with snow tires). Didn't really consider a smaller size to cut through.

I've always run on 225, no real problem.

My 225/45/18 rubs the front liner on full lock in a parking lot, but i don't have to deal with the ground scraping issues that I had when I ran 225/40/18.

225 goes through snow nicely.
