Options for Shocks/Struts
Options for Shocks/Struts
Dear Forum Members,
I am looking to lower my 2010 Evo X GSR (1.25 inches in the front and 1 inch in the rear) and I'm thinking of going the lowering spring route instead of coilovers. My car has the original shocks/struts and I've heard it's highly recommended that you replace the shocks/struts if putting lowering springs on older shocks because it will increase their wear. My car currently has 70,000 miles on it. My question is:
1. Are there ANY other shocks/struts that fit the EVO X other than the OEM GSR shocks or the Bilsteins that come of the Evo X MR? I've done LOTS of searches online and the ONLY shocks/struts that come up are the MR shocks and those are are $980 per strut for the front and $455 per strut for the rear. The costs to replace all four is $2,613.00 on the STM Tuned website. At that price, I would rather just get a nice set of Ohlin or KW coilovers.
2. If there are other options, what are some good recommendations for shocks/struts that would fit my needs?
ANY help you can provide would greatly be appreciated.
Thank You,
Lando

The Struts on the Evo's are coil overs.
And yes most recommend that you do a full coil over over lowering springs
You can get a set of BC racing BR's for 1/2 that new. around 1200ish
There's actually a set on Ebay right now for 400 and look like their in good shape.

Always recommend Apexi ExV coilovers. I had a set on both my 8 and 10 and for budget coilovers, they are great.
You can pick them up for $900-$1,000.
They even work decently on track.
I have ohlins now. Which I HIGHLY recommend for track use but for street and budget, the ExV hands down every time.
I've had BC's and fortunes before. They are junk.

Who makes the OEM coilovers for the GSR? When I search for OEM ANYTHING for the Evo X, the ONLY thing that comes up are the Bilsteins. And that's just for the strut. No spring included. I was under the impression that TRUE coilovers where shocks/struts with a specific spring that is matched to it while regular shocks were just the struts with more generic springs. Either way, when I look, I don't find ANYTHING for the GSR, only the MR and again, its only for the strut. For $2,400 (price of all 4 struts online), why would anyone opt for that when you can get nice KWs or Ohlins? I"m just trying to weigh my options. I was under the impression that a shock + lowering spring option was supposed to be cheaper but if they are both expensive, I would just rather go with a nice set of coilovers, even though I'll never see the track.
