Rim size question

Hi! I am searching for a nice rim for my Evo! A friend of mine also Evo enthusiast told be to go to 18x9 size rim and not 18x8.5 (oem). He claims that rally Evo used to be 10mm wider so suggested or buy 18x8.5 and use spacers, or even better choose 18x9 rim without spacers and stay close to factory ET. Also claims that the car is far better if rims go 5mm outward each and oem tyre 245/40 R18 will fit perfect even on 18x9 rim size. The reason I want to change rim is for less weight and performance as main concern. Visual is less important. What's your opinion?

Are you competing in a class/group with wheel restrictions? I'm a lowly autocrosser and will be going 18x10.5 (+15 to +22) with a 275/35 in the future.

Hi! No. I just like going as fast as i can To be honest i want to stick as possible it gets to factory setup. 18x8.5 ET38 and buy a lightweight rim less than 9kg (Oem Enkei is 10kg). I only ask for 18x9 because I don't know if a 10mm wider evo is really an improvement.

Wider is always better with wheels and tires. The evo x can fit a lot of wheel and tire without much work.

With bigger rims comes bigger weight except super expensive from carbon for example that costs a fortune. Also bigger rim means bigger tire. But bigger tire doesn't mean better steering because doesn't necessarily means and bigger tire print. For better steering a better suspension (ohlins road and track) and a better tire could transform the car to a rocketship on corners! That's why I am asking. Because I don't know where the truth is.

talking about weight, it may be very played out (but there is a reason) the enkei RPF1 in a 18x10.5 is actually lighter than the factory enkei by 2.5lbs per wheel. But eavier than the BBS by 1lb per wheel. It's also probably the most affordable performance wheel out there.

And why choose a 18x10.5 rim and just don't choose 18x9 and change the offset to make the rim go a little more outside? Also even if weight is not the problem on 18x10.5, the problem comes with the tire as I mentioned above. You will need bigger tire!

My rationale is that I have the heaviest model Evo, MR Touring weighing in just under 3700lbs. So I want light weight wheel in the widest option (with minimal fender rolling) and lowest offset to create the largest contact patch. Corner grip should be much higher with that higher coefficient of friction, with a slight sacrifice in straight line acceleration. I'm currently rolling over my sidewall (stock bilsteins) with 2* camber all around.

But don't take this as me trying to dissuade you from what you want. I know for my goals lighter and wider will provide the outcomes I desire.

Personally I'd pick the widest wheel that give my wide tires a bit of stretch. on the evo9 this plus camber helps tuck the tire into the fender. should be at least at max recommended wheel width for the tire.. .half inch wider than max recommended is ideal for me
I sold my 18x10.5 NT03 to an evoX owner and it looks perfect for his car, with my old 285s. he got faster at autox too

Enkei RPF1 18x8.5 +30 is the answer to your question. I have Enkei RSO5RR 18x9.5 +22 with 255/35 tires. Lowered on Swift springs.

I strongly believe the same! FQ-440 which is an evo on steroids build right from UK dealers comes with oem size rims and tire! I was thinking the new Enkei Triumph. Comes with exact the oem specs too! 18x8.5 ET38! https://enkei.com/shop/wheels/tuning/triumph/ . I just don't know weight yet!

After some light searching I was able to find a Reddit user who weighed their Triumph 18x9.5 at 21.6 lbs. LSD Motorsports has the 18x8 listed at 23 lbs. Found a few websites listing 29 lbs, which I believe is false. IF I had to guess I'd say these wheels will be in the 20-21 lb area. The factory GSR wheels weigh 22 lbs 15 ounces. You'll have to decide if this is worth it to you. If you're on a budget I'd personally go with the RPF1.

Tirerack is showing 21lbs.

Me too. For less than 2kg per rim at least doesn't even worth to change the oem rims! It's better to spend this money somewhere else!

if you want lightweight and cheap, look into Konig Hypergrams. My18x11 are 19.5lbs. Several people race on these including myself. Enkei RPFs are like hand-me-downs to "ricers" these days

Wow, I didn't realize the hypergrams were that light! Might have to reconsider.
