THat would be me..... I read the chapter in the drivers ed book on how to drive a manual. I bought my first car with never driving stick and away I went.

I also did the same with my First Bike (99 R1); never rode one before I bought one.

But yes it does take time to shift nice and easy.

 

my evo is my first manual tranny car... i knew the mechanics going in and had practiced maybe a total of 4 times in my life. I stalled 1 time leaving the dealer and never again... i dont rev it high to get going, i dont bog or burn the clutch. In the time that i've had it i've burned the clutch ONCE (thought i was in 1st at a toll booth but it was third... thought i was gonna stall so i clutched in and revved more before feahtering out.) I think i'm doing just fine... i've had some tips from friends but it only took 1 night in a parking lot to get the hang of smooth steady starts down cold.


do whatever you want... its your $$$.... but it can definitely be done safely.

 

My buddy taught me on his Del Sol before summer. My family doesn't have any manual cars.

I got my other friend to let me drive his 5 speed SHO, drove that with no problems.

 

You would find it much easier learning to drive a stick on a non turbo car. They have more torque and are harder to stall. I would not want to learn on an EVO.

There are a couple things to keep in mind when learning.

1) You don’t need the clutch unless you are starting off, coming to a stop or shifting gears. (This means don't dip the clutch around corners)
2) You don't need first gear unless you are at a stop. Don't try to get into first gear until you are stopped.
3) Don't hold the car with the clutch on a hill! My wife learned this way – Argh Instead use the handbrake and ease into first.
4) Don't be afraid to drop a gear instead of bogging the car. You will find recommended speeds for each gear in the EVO manual.

me 2 man.....but your dad if he was born there like mine should be a pro at stick have him teach u, i learned on my oz......its pretty easy........how old are u? cuz im sure those indian parents wont be paying for insurance for that evo haha

 

Hey everyone has to learn at one point...just DON'T & I repeat DON'T learn on an EVO. Have a friend teach you I am sure they would be more then willing. Just make sure it's not a hard manual to drive. Some of them are tricky.

 

I've driven plenty of sticks but my evo is the first stick i've owned. took a little getting used to, but like everything else in life, takes practice and getting used to. the learning curve is up to you.

Just to give you a comparison on a scale of 1-5 of how tricky a manual is, 1 being easy:

Evo - 3
New M3 - 4
Viper GTS - 2 (one of the easiest manuals I ever drove even with all that power)
Civic - 1
s2000 - 2
Late 80's Porsche 911's - 5

 

I just bought a 04 ralli art thats a stick i had never owned a car that was a stick before and Im 24, anyways I have it down I knew how to drive a stick from riding street bikes and 4 wheelers, but my girl wants to learn and I am afraid to let her learn on my new ride. I am thinking about renting a car to teach her on, the thought of her grinding gears and burning the clutch hurts.

 

funny post but i've seen this before...my friend's first stick he drove was on his new 03 evo. his gf taught him how to drive it and a few months later, hes fine, he just hasnt perfected it. He doesnt wanna progress. He just drives as is. He doesnt know how to launch, down shift correctly, shift quick enough to beat a stock wrx, or shift at redline without overreving, but yes me personally would NOT suggest learning on an evo. Use a friends civic or somethin and learn there i learned on a civic then a 2g eclipse. I'm fine now.

 

btw to me, what makes it hard to learn on an evo is the awd system, the clutch springs back and its hard to level it out with the gas for a newbie and of course the wonderful power of the car. I think its too much for a newb, might panic and crash.

 

How is the Evo perfect for you then? ....you obviously haven't driven one.

 

for all you saying dont learn on an evo, what is your response for those who have and have had no problems after 10,15...25k miles? I just dont get some of your reasoning. Not everyone is going to rev it to 7k etc etc.

thats amazing ive driven stick about 4 times for like a hour each time my friend let me borrow his protege 5 wagon that was fun just practice its tricky but hell is that fun to drive cant wait to get my evo my dad can drive it off the lot im not gonna run into the dealership like that one pic you all know wat im talkin about!!

 

I learned on my civic. My dad drove it home from the dealership for me, dropped the keys on the table and said "Have fun." while he walked away laughing. Two hellish weeks later I had it down pat.

Then a few years later I got a supra, put a stage 3 bronze six puck clutch in, and had fun with that. The Evo is a piece of cake compared to that car, hehe. I never saw one tech that could pull my supra into the bay without stalling it.
