Exhaust
I am new to tuning and the evo community. I want to get an exhaust system, but I am not sure what I need to get. What does an exhaust system come with? Do I need to get a catback as well? If I get a new cat will my evo not pass emmissions testing? Is it illegal to have certain types of exhaust? Is the downpipe part of the exhaust sytems I see on sale on this site? Do I need a tune with a new exhaust? And any recommendations, I do not want something that idles loudly. I am looking for something that is light weight. Price doesn't matter. Increased speed is of high importance. Sorry for all the questions but don't like to buy anything without knowing something about it.
You have come to the right forum for answers.
First off, try running a search before you start your own thread. Ehxaust is one topic that has been covered many times over with varying opinions on several systems. FYI: You can even find installation help here, too.
Cat-back means exactly that, from the catalytic converter back. There are two bolts holding your stock cat-back to the cat and a few hangers...thats it. This is the most common type of aftermarket exhaust upgrade. Most vehicle warrenties are unnaffected b/c the stock cat is left in place. Installation is simple and straight-forward with moderate increase in sound and preformance.
If powere is your goal, the stock cat has to go. You have two options...run a high-flow cat or run a cat delete pipe. A high flow cat flows with less restriction, and may be emmissions compliant...check with the vendor like Helix. A cat delete pipe or test pipe omits the cat completely to offer an unrestricted flow. However, you need to midify the Oxygen sensor wiring with a CEL fix to keep your CEL lite from coming on. BTW: this option is NOT emmissions legal.
Most exhaust systems comply with the 95 decible law, therefore legal.
A downpipe is the piece after the turbo ehxaust housing and before the cat. Replacement of this can yield good power, but is not legal in some states.
You can tune for an exhaust if you wish, but the simple method is to reset your ECU after install and let your computer make its own map for the increased flow.
There are plenty of exhaust systems on the market for the EVO. I prefer quiet, but I have heard many of the titanium systems and they are to loud for my neighbors.
Hope that helps...pm me if you have any other questions.

If you decide to go with no cat (which is illegal I know) you dont have to get a CEL eliminator you can just use to spark plug arrestors to pull the stock 02 sensor out a bit and you will not get a check engine light plus it's only about $3 and little time with a drill and your done. I know of 5 local Evo's and not one has ever gotten another check engine light after this mod. Best of luck to you, your in the right place there are probably hundreds of exhaust threads to give all the info you could ever need about any brand made.
