it's such a close race between the V1 and the 8500, they go back and forth depending on which source you get your review from. Admittedly I would like the arrows, but I like the readout on the 8500 a lot better, it is also much easier to change settings on the 8500 (without lots of time to fiddle). I have my 8500 X50 mounted at the top left corner of my windshield, I did purchase a hardwire kit and the remote sits in the cubby under the climate controls. Either one is a great purchase

This site gave me all the info I needed before purchasing my detector. Check it out! Radar Roy Product Test! This guy tested all the major detectors, Even the V.One! I ended up with one of the fully hidden units.

I suggest you read the entire contents on this page:

My V1 is actually in the best position for laser and radar. Also, real-world experience shows me that it works.

Mount location won't make any difference if a cop pops you with laser. He will have you instantly. The only good a detector with laser sensitivity is so you can catch the light waves bouncing off of other cars around you. Laser light reflects 90 degrees perpendicular to the surface it hits so it doesn't much matter where you mount your detector, as long as it has a clear view through the windshield.

As for the "who's best", like stated before it's all back and forth. Belltronics also has a nice highly rated unit. It basically falls down into usability and looks. Pick what you like, they will all offer something that the others don't.

I have tried the V1 and it is the best around. The test in the earlier post tested a V1 without POP2 so of course it was not the best but the new ones have POP2 which is Ka band. You will know it when turn it on, it will show Pop in the screen.

I am not going to argue with what mike Valentine says, but what do u do when the cop aims at your liscense plate or front bumber? they only aim at your windshield when the car has a dark color, they get better reading from lisccne plate than windshields. middle of windshild is a safer bet IMO

Here's a good idea to look into before you buy. Find out what kind of Radar/Laser systems your local police/HP/Sheriff's office is using before you buy. Pop mode is still too new to be used widely, just like Laser. I've used mine in three states now and the only time Pop goes off it's a false alert with NO cops around. Save yourself some money if that is a concern. Valentine is all hype for the same features as lower priced models.

I wouldn't say laser is not used widely yet. THere is a small town near where I live (less than 2000 people), and the I regularly got laser hits when passing through town, and yes, I could see him parked alongside the road ahead
