Talking Okay, I've got one...what now?

Hey guys...my asbestos suit is at the cleaners, so please ... no flaming ...after all...I am a noob here

I've been reading a ton of posts about this car, and the mods you can make, but I'm going to need your help as to:

1. What mods I should be doing in order of importance (i.e. I would imagine a different air-box, or airfilter, different exhaust...etc.). Also, I'm going to need your recommendations for the components (brand names). I don't want to necessarily drag-race...at least not professionally ....just looking to gradually pick up some HP here and there, so I just want to do some simple, low-cost mods first, then some of the more expensive (i.e. larger turbo, etc.) later.

Alright...suggestions!?! (oh yeah...and uh....thanks in advance )

- Steve

in my opinion the cheapest best mod to do is a MBC from either Buschur racing or hallman. this will cure the boost taper. and will hold the 19psi all the way through red line, instead of droping down to 15psi. good upgrade for only $75- $100. next is the intake and the exhaust need to be bigger.....you know what just go with the buschur racing stage 1.

Just a thought. If i were you i would wait a little while before modding. break her in a little first. that way you can have fun with her and not have to deal with any warranty hassles for a while. then when you start becoming more bored of it start modding. but i would assume probably putting in a new performance air filter or maybe exhaust would be one of the first things on your list. or full underbody neons...........lol just playin.

I second Kaput. Break it in. Drive it a good 1500 miles before you do anything. On a personal note, first mod I did was a TBE(turbo back exhaust if you are REALLY a noob).

Full underbody neons?....say.....that oughta add at least 15hp! Joking aside, I agree with what you're saying - I'm working through the break-in as we speak. I read through the sticky about voiding the warranty, but there's a lot of info there to mull through. I assume that modding the EPROM (i.e. boost settings, etc.) will void the warranty? What other mods are a sure-fire way to void the warranty? And I assume we're talking about the powertrain warranty right?

Break it in. And then when you thirst for more mods go performance only at first. Use your money for speed rather than show. Get an intake, TBE and then your ECU flashed. Then add more in-depth mods if you decide on it being ok to void the warranty (cam gears, etc).

The warranty...hrm, that's a difficult issue. I'd talk to the dealership as it seems there are slightly different rules based on where you go. Some people have had problems with very minor or no mods, while others (I know of one first-hand) that has had warranty work done on a heavily modified car. I'd drive it a few thousand miles before modding (just to be sure there's nothing that's really faulty), then go as your comfortable. Simple mods are intake (although there is some debate about that), MBC (again, some debate depending on your school of thought), TBE (not debated often for good reason, it's a good gain.) Take your time, read up (as there is plenty of info on all this around), and have fun with it.

mods are good bro, but from my expierence from my stock evo (which i baby and honestly don't beat the fuc.k out of it) at 3000 miles i had already gotten a engine replacement (via warrenty) and now i have it back i put on about 300 miles (very easy on the new engine break-in period) and i having problems with it again, i guess i might just have a lemon but my modding is going to be strickly under warrenty policy, cause i don't trust the intergrety of this car anymore.

Good luck on your decision.

It's really up to you but basically if you upgrade anything the best mod is tuning for that part or parts to experience the potential of them.
Here is a thread about an MR with minimal mods and the great results from them with Dynoflash.
