Question What is it and do I need it?

Can anyone tell me what these are?

What do they do?

And can they be removed?

and yeah, you might want to hang on to those, they'll help protect stuff if you rear-end someone

Yup. Impact dampers. You need them to be US DOT legal. You can get rid of them if you like, but you'll have holes in the frame from where the bolts go, plus if you hit something, you're pretty much assured of getting screwed. Try putting in a nice mesh to cover up the gaping maw effect. Unless there's an intercooler or mesh there, big mouths look really stupid.

the answer to your problem is..... you need black mesh. if you have mesh you'll barely notice them... or if u dont want mesh, which would suck lol.... then u can just take those off and color match them to your car

mine actually broke off awile ago due to my car being lowered and scraping the front(i have stock bumper so these things hit first.) one day i was driving and saw one of them go flying off the car into the ditch at the side off the road(damn pa roads suck). the rubber couldnt take any more abuse i guess. oh well, in one month or so a big yummy intercooler will take their place anyways.

but ya, insurance dont like you taking off safety equipment.

i'd go with mesh if i were you, i am once i get my fmic to keep it sleeper.

yes, they actually are safety equipment. if you were to take those off and then someone were to stop really fast in front of you, say goodbye to any insurance money
