How to optimize new motor break-in?

Hi all,

Brand new to this forum. Since Sunday (4/24/05) I am now the proud owner of an Evo VIII!!!

My question was with regard to recommended break-in guidelines of the motor:

-The manual says keep under 5000 rpm for first 600 miles
-A member of a local club said he recommends 3000rpm or less for first 500 miles

I did a search and didnt come up with much result on this topic. Any suggestions based on your experience? I want to make sure & do this right..

Thanks

I just purchased one a few weeks ago and I just got 300 miles on it. I was asking similar questions from everybody just like you on breaking. To sum up what everybody told me.

Some say to keep it out of boost for the first 600 miles which is below 3,000rpm. Some say to just not beat it up(pulling up to and past 5,000 constantly every time you drive it. The mechanic at my dealership told me that the motors are already broken in and to just take it easy the first 1,000 miles.

It is a good idea to change your oil at 1,000 miles though.

For me I am just babying the car. I try not to go past 3,000rpm except when I get on the freeway where I shift at about 5-6,000rpm.

Hope that helps.

I would not worry, but what I do want to tell you. Is to change your oil at 1,000 miles. I did that just for safety. I bought the oil filter from Mitsubishi and 10W30 SuperSyn from Wallmart for about $25 and I went to a shop by my house and I gave the guy $10 to change my oil. Do not trust Mitsubishi to do anything right on these cars. I do everything on my car and I could not be happier. Also let me know what mods you want to do?

It is extremely, exTREMELY hard to keep it out of boost. Breakin on this car is like getting a lapdance (the power is there but you just can't touch it) . I screwed up and redlined it once on accident.

The coolest part is the change in noise the car goes through. At around 150 miles or so you will notice the beautiful sound of the turbo more prominant.

One thing that really, really pissed me off about the mitsubishi dealership. The car just seemed really bouncey so I decided to check the tire pressure and guess what the tire pressure was AT!!!!! 50PSI!!!!!!

I noticed around the edge of the tires it was starting to wear weird and I had less than 100miles on them. So I put them back down to factory 32psi specs. I'm pretty sure the dealership didn't put in premium gas either because I noticed that the car ran alot better after my full tank of premium that I put into it.

There is nothing more satisfying, then when you step on it and the boost comes on and you get pinned to your seat. Then you bust a nut and you can harly see in front of you. You step on it again and the boost comes on again and you bust the second nut and now you want to sleep. Be very carefull

I look forward to that sound, especially with a new exhaust being #2 on my mod list. And yes, it is quite difficult to keep it out of boost, the temptation is always there. I love the stripper analogy, very accurate.

I see youre in Red Bluff, I went to Chico State. I miss those days..

Thanks for the feedback, I'll certainly do 1st change at 1000mi

Mods list is pretty simple for now:

1) Springs very soon (was thinking Tein S-Techs or Eibachs).

2) Cat-back exhaust (was thinking Greddy, but not sure if it will be loud enough)

3) Intake (havent started this research yet)

Any recommendations/suggestions?

Thanks

Well this is the way I went....

I had and I really mean I only had $1,000 to spend so this is what I did.

1. Turbo Timer
2. AMS - MBC and Defi D Boost Gauge
3. Fuel Pump
4. TBE - Helix 3" all the way.

I bought (1,3,4) From www.gruppe-s.com
and I bout (2) From AMS.

Man the car felt like it was on Crack. Big Difference.

Now I put another $1,000 into the car and I am running 11.7 1/4 all the time.

Not bad for $2,000

Where do you live?

I wish that thread did help!

it was actually pretty confusing. Snyth or Dino..either way its a judgement call with results based on subjective data

I'm already at almost 70 miles with Synthetic, not sure if its too late to go Mineral oil and help seat bearings or not. No one seemed to have a definitive answer
