Lancer's not bad at all for a beginner econo-box. I think the only reason It's caught flak in the auto press is that A) most of those guys who should know better hear Lancer and think nothing but Evolution, failing to realize that Lancer has a ton of heritage in the Mitsu family even without the Evo, and B) there was no high-performance equivalent, like the SVT Focus, or the Civic Si.

 

if you get an automatic, youre gonna want to make it good, but then you'll realize that people make fun of you for having an automatic and then you'll want a manual.. sooo i'd say get a manual right now while you can.
