Trying out ACD for first time and whoa!

So i take my evo to my local pond where there is a nice big sand/dirt/gravel type parking lot and whip a few donuts and all I can say is WOW this car is really the best going off road.

1st donut on Tarmac setting I did a huge whip and got pretty sideways , Oh my, it feel fast coming out of the turn and bombing straight on the gravel nothing like a truck.

2nd donut on Gravel setting was just totally insane I wouldnt even call it a donut considering I just flew 60feet sideways Oh man was that fun. I seriously have more fun offroading in this thing just because I love controlling that oversteer and straightening out and just rocketing forward its soooo unbelieveably fast on that ****.

Oh and I have a question about the ACD like when its on tarmac will it be like a 60% power in rear 40% front and on gravel more of a 50/50, how does this thing work?!?!

P.S. Offroadings only downside are the rocks and **** all hitting your undercarraige and paint job oh well

i only really use the different settings when its dry, wet, or snowing outside, i've yet to really use the full benefit of the ACD

I feel the ACD working all the time (when drifting).

If you do a search you can find the exact ratios for tarmac, snow, and gravel. You never get more than 50% to the rear. Tarmac I believe is 50/50, and snow is 90/10, and gravel is somewhere in between.

Actually, it's not that simple. The ACD is way more complex than that. The different settinsg change the computer software mappings that change the split from 50/50 to 100/0 based on inputs from steering, acceleration, wheel velocities, etc.

I thought I saw a good post on how it worked, but I forget where it is. It basically said that the ACD is constantly changing the split to adjust for the different inputs.

Ummm...the Gravel setting is practically FWD (with around 70% of the drive to the front wheels). You would have much more oversteer with the Tarmac (50:50) setting on deformable surfaces.

It's a shame you can never get more than 50% of the drive to the rear wheels. That would really take the Evo's dry handling to the next level, especially since we don't get S-AYC to help quell understeer.

Sure...but you still never get more than 50% to the rear wheels.

I think where people get confused is the percentage. I actually believe the differential can only either be 100/0 or 0/100 at any single point in time, but within one second, it may have the rear locked for 0.2 seconds and the front locked for 0.8 seconds (broken up into thousandths of a second of course), so the torque split over that second is 80/20. And yes, if the computer senses you doing something, it will vary the torque depending on what you are doing. I think the overall numbers come from the averages over time, not the specific instances where the computer takes into account you are plowing into a corner and decides to free up the front diff a bit or other similar situations.

ACD locks front and rear 50/50 whole time. (NO torq split, ACD never splits torq)

How ACD works:

When you turn the wheel in Tarmac mod-The ACD opens instantly
When you turn the wheel in Gravel mod-The ACD takes 2 to 3 seconds to open
When you turn the wheel in Snow mod-The ACD takes 4-5 seconds to open

Ah that's what it is. I guess I should download that ~5 page technical paper about ACD now lol. Every magazine I've read says a different thing, but they all say something about percentages. I know the diff can only lock & unlock, but I didn't know it was both at the same time, I thought it was either/or.

I wonder how Subaru accomplishes their rear bias then? I suppose it's a different kind of differential entirely.
